Why New Zealand, and Not Australia ?

Good Day All

Short and sweet question, that I'm pretty sure had been asked by most of you ? Why have you chosen New Zealand instead of Australia.

My reasons were a little odd because I struggled to choose between the two.
1) Severe racism (people regularly told to go back where they came from) seemed very common in Australia in comparison to NZ.
2) Being from Durban, I was sick of sticky heat, and thought that the cooler weather would be good (After living in NZ for 3.5 years, I'd like some heat again)
3) Far less creepy crawlies and no dangerous creatures in NZ

We did some extensive research on where to settle over the past year. The places we considered were Canada, UK, Australia and New Zealand. Each territory included a laundry list of prerequisites so we first determined our eligibility to obtain residence and then citizenship. We then took the following factors into account sorted by weighting:
  • Work / Life Balance
  • Family Friendly and Safe
  • Ability to adjust to new culture
  • Scarcity of our Skill Sets / Ease of Finding Employment
  • Remuneration and cost of living
  • Obtaining Citizenship for us and the kids
  • Ability to adjust to the climate

Taking all into account, Wellington seemed the obvious choice. Second on the list was Melbourne, but our standard of living would have taken a hit.

Hope this helps.

@ Yusuf, funny thing - I was also sick of the heat (albeit Joburg summers)! But I really miss the sun now.

We looked at Australia first. They pushed the points up and we no longer qualified. We chose Australia purely because we didnt know any better. Now we are happy that things turned out the way they did and would choose NZ of Aus any day.
