CHANGES TO SMC PROCESS
« on: October 12, 2016, 01:09:07 am »
The minister announced changes to the SMC visa process yesterday aimed at increasing the overall quality of skilled migrants being granted resident class visas while at the same reducing the number of visas being granted. In a nutshell these include:

• Changing the planning range for residence approvals for the next two years to 85,000-95,000 (down from 90,000-100,000)
• Raising the number of points required for residence from 140 to 160 points under the Skilled Migrant Category
• Reducing the number of places for the capped family categories to 2000 per year (down from 5500)
• Where proof of English language proficiency could be provided in several different forms in the past you will now have to do one of several tests.

Basically, if you barely managed to make 140 points yesterday then you stand almost no chance today.

Thats hectic. So is that for the automatic selection? How about for being entered into pool?

Not only that, but selection is only 160 points and over. Before if you had under 140 points and a job offer you would be selected but they will no longer select in the same way i.e you won't be selected if you had under 160 points with a job offer.

Also, just remember though, a person could potentially earn more points for job offers outside of Auckland!

I just had a look at selection results from the EOI pool. Two weeks back under the 140 points rule there were over 980 EOIs selected. Last week they selected only 480.

The draw results are split only by with/without job offer and on/off-shore. Both those still require 160 or more points. On both draws South African's remained at 6% of those selected.

The 160-point selection stats I am referring to can be found here: https://www.immigration.govt.nz/documents/smc-fortnightly-selection/fact-sheet-2016-09-28-1.pdf
