NZ vs Oz
« on: August 13, 2007, 08:41:03 AM »
Don't know if someone asked before but why did you decide on Nz instead of Oz? I had a really bad weekend (emotionally)  :(. Spend some time with friends going to Oz and saw some pictures they took there. It looks like something from a holiday catalogue! How bad is the humidity really?

Hi G, yes it has been asked before.

See HERE and HERE.

Also make sure you check THIS link out !

As for OZ looking like something out of a holiday catalogue, there's no way in hell that Oz can compare to the beauty of NZ ! Besides a strip of the east coast, it's a big dry hot dust bowl.

The humidity, which country are you asking about ? What is worrying you about NZ ? Ask away, and perhaps the other members can answer your questions.  O0

G, we only had two reasons, it is easier to get into NZ  O0 and too many Australians in OZ....  >:D

Jokes aside.. both have their pro's and con's.

our reasons were simple. NZ offers a more laid back way of life which suited us fine and provided a perfect environment to bring up our kids in. We also have family and New Zealand and that will be a great help to us too.

Most immigrants living in New Zealand end up staying, So I hear. Some of the South Africans I have met came here with the intention of eventually moving to Australia, and they still here with no further interest in leaving.

But I have not yet heard of a Kiwi not liking Australia, they all seem to love it and speak very highly of it. This is one of the reasons for the huge skills shortage in NZ, many Kiwis move to Australia, its no myth.

With all the rain we have been having here in Wellington, I have actually caught myself now on a few occasions thinking that I may have to give Aus a try. However, I have not been there, except to Sydney and will be there next week for a few days. But I am slowly starting to love this place, who knows what the future holds, have not experienced a NZ summer yet either.

Either way, I don't think we can go wrong compared to deepest, darkest Africa ! At least we blessed with having the opportunity to experience these other countries.

Worsie you are also there alone, when your wife and kids come it will be better.  I can not understand something, maybe you can help.  A few people have commented on the rain, snow, sleet brrr, but nobody is making any mention of Gluvine(spelling?)  Don't you guys drink it there?  I will miss the winter completely and have the worst Autumn hangover ever, but it will be sooo worth it.   ;)

Whats gluvine? drink it?  never heard of it? something i should know about? google gluvine, lets go check...

Not having the family here definitely plays a huge part, I agree.

Don't get me wrong I think we knew what we were in for and I have arrived at the coldest wettest part of the year. plus I have only been here now for 1 month so i actually don't think i really have much room to talk. People here are forced to do a lot of walking, in fact I walk about 2 1/2 km every morning from the car park to work (its a $6 carpark so worth the walk as parking is very expensive in the city, you licky if you get less than $10 per day). But, I like the walking, its nice to be able to walk around town like that and you always appreciate it. Then its the same walk back every evening. Now comes the "bad part" walking in the freezing cold wind is no joke really, hence i have these fantasies about Hot Dry Aus every now and again.

Now that brings back memories !  :D

I used to spend an average of 2 hours every day walking in the UK, to the bus stop, to work, lunch time, and back again. In the rain, snow, sleet, and gale force winds for 2 years. I loved it !  8)

Ingredients:

4 qts. dry red wine (such as zinfandel, pinot, burgundy, etc.)
1 qt. dry white wine
1 pt. Marc (or heavy brandy)
1 c. white sugar (more to taste)
6 sticks cinnamon
12 whole cloves
1/8 tsp. allspice
1/8 tsp. mace
2 oranges
1 lemon

Directions:

Pour 6 ounces red wine from the first bottle into an appropriate glass for later  quality control checks. This may need to be repeated from another bottle, at the cook's  discretion. Pour the remaining wine from the first bottle into a 3 gallon pot (or larger)  and begin gentle heating. As it begins to warm, add sugar and spices. Stir until sugar is  dissolved. Add Marc (or brandy) and all remaining wine. (Note: if there are too many  quality control checks, it is frequently necessary to purchase more wine.) Heat thoroughly  but do not allow to boil! Add thinly sliced lemon and 1 orange and allow mix to  steep for about 1 hour over low heat. Add more sugar during this time if desired, but do  it slowly and ensure it dissolves. Frequent samples are usually required during this time,  again for the sake of quality control. Serve hot and garnish with orange slices. A stick  cinnamon could also be used. Serve about 12-15 folks, or two quality control inspectors.

Rhodan, you got the right attitude boet. You will love wellington.

Check out this video from youtube. My landing in Wellington was actually OK, and nothing out of the ordinary. The wind in Wellington makes a cape town south easter look like a spring breeze.

I decided not to show this to my wife until after her arrival.
