I wonder what triggered the major jump in 2001.
Interestinly in april last year you could convert 3 600 000 rand to get 1 million nz $ and a few weeks ago it would have requierd 5 500 500 rand. EINA
The worst is that you go when you go and you have little in fact no control of what the rate will be.

If I remember correctly the jump in 2001 was supposedly due to a consortium of overseas investors messing around with the Rand. They said they were investigating it, but it was never heard of again, or I missed the outcome. Bottom line it never recovered, so I suspect that it was more probably due to mismanagement by SARB?

Now any idea why the Kiwi was so weak in April last. Got to look out for similar conditions.
I am not sure whether I should take some rands out now in view of the most recent strengthening or wait?

Here is another graph i plotted, this one contains more currencies. As you can see the same trend follows the USD and AUD against the rand. The tells me one thing, the rand is loosing value all the time against most other currencies.

Currently the $NZ is at its strongest level ever against the rand. It was around the R5.50 when I took most of my money out, what can you do? I could not afford sitting around waiting for the rand to get stronger.

Thanks for the graphs.  I bought some yesterday at 5.29.  I have also noticed the R seems to be down on a  Monday and up on a Friday with the USD.  Is there a trend for this to plot or not?

We found that we could get a better deal in NZ when doing a TT (Electronic Transfer) of our settling in allowance.  Our bank here advised us to have our bank in SA transfer in Rand and they would change it here at a more favourable rate, and only charge us $10 for the transaction....

In NZ we are with National Bank.  In SA it's ABSA.
