1 salary or 2?
« on: September 21, 2007, 08:27:04 am »
Are there any of you in NZ who live on a single salary while the other parent stays home with the kids?

What kind of salary would you need to earn to do that?

Are stay-at-home dads common in NZ?

Johnson,

We currently live on one salary, have done for 6 years now, started in SA.  I am currently a stay-at-home mum.  I'm sure there are loads of stay-at-home-dad's in NZ.

I you can cope on your current SA salary then you should cope on around the same here.  Take your SA salary and divide by R5.11 or what ever the current exchange rate is.  That should give you an idea of what NZ salary you could be looking at.

Other people in the forum will have more information on how they have found things and what has worked for them.

if I multiply my NZ teachers salary by 5.11 it is double my SA teachers salary. I am much better off here than in SA.

I guess it is a very personal thing. It depends on what you are expecting or used to. To some it would not work out but for others they would be happy to do with less and have the advantage of staying with the kids. If it does not work out you could always try to get a part time job for a few hours a week to supplement the income and fill in any gholes in the budget.

I may be wrong, but I think a salary of $70,000+ would allow one partner to stay at home, again it does depend on your lifestyle expectations, and how many kids there are, etc.

And yes, I met a SAHD the other day in the library!

do not try to compare your salary in NZ to that you got in SA, not by using the exchange rate in any case. It simply does not work that way. Yiu will have to run a month or so and get a feel as to where your budget will go in relation to your income, and of course want you want for a life style. you will pretty soon discover where you stand in realtion to income and than can tailor your situation accordingly.

I agree with Johan, and I'll add that you may need to give it more than one month.  Because in the first month (or even two) you're building up supplies from scratch.  So your groceries may be expensive for the first while, because you're buying basics like salt, pepper, flour and sugar, etc. which you usually don't have to buy every single week/month even.  I was in a sort state of shock the first few weeks, and have still not fully recovered!  you know.... you go off and buy some grocs, come home and think... blast!  I forgot I needed x...  Even if you did make a list!!!
Hmm.... perhaps I should sit down and make a list of basics to buy to start out when you get here, and then Nolan can put it up somewhere... I'll add current prices from various stores, so you can see the differences.  And also so you can get an idea of what your first month's grocs will cost you, to just set up house...

Just be patient though... my kids are on holiday, so I'm not going to go groc shopping with them (need to keep my sanity!)  So will get to this in two weeks' time (ummm..... inbetween unpacking the container?)  oh no.... what have I got myself into!? :heeha:
