If I am renting a house for $500 per week, does that mean that some months I pay $2000 and other months I pay $2500?

Deposit is 3 weeks rent
The rent - at  most companies you pay every fortnight

so for $250 a week  , 3 x 250 = $750 bond  + $250 for first weeks rent ; so its  $1000 just to move in

if you rent for say 6 months then move somewhere else; the "bond" moves with you ; government keeps it ; not estate agent or landlord. Disputes go through government if something is broken for example; and they deside who gets the money

A good tip to ensure that you do get your bond back is to video tape the whole property when you move in, highlighting all the breakages. Keep the date display on so that there is a reference of that. If possible give the estate agent a copy as well. If you don't have a video camera, take photos.

This way they can't charge you for existing breakages.

thnx for that info Chantel.
I'd also like to know if they have "extended stay" hotels/motels?  i.e. somewhere where you can stay for say a month or two before you find the house you want to rent?  That's we do here in the USA.  That way you don't sign yourself into a contract before you know where you want to live.  Here in the USA, you have to sign long term leases, like 6 months minimum, and that's tough.  Esp when we were used to being on a month-to-month basis in SA.
