Shopping

Will I have to take my own shopping bags, like in SA, when I go shopping and pack my own groceries?

Our experience there was, no.  They pack and provide you with bags the way thing used to go here.  You don't pay extra for that.  We did some shopping at Food Town and New World.  They are similar to SPAR & Pick & Pay.

There are some stores though that do require you to buy a bag.  This was in Auckland.  Will ask my sister the name of it.

I also seem to recall reading that a bill has been passed about paying for shopping bags, I will try and find the link again.

From my sister:

you don't pay for shopping bags at most stores, but you can buy canvas or shopper bags to re-use.  At PaknSave - the cheapest store, you get boxes to put your goods in, or you buy bags for 10c.

Another shopping question is : are shops open on Sundays.

Not all shops are open on Sundays, although there is no restriction for them to be closed, many decide to take Sundays off. The only days that most shops MUST close are Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Christmas Day and until one o'clock on Anzac Day.

ah.... a country that still values those days... Yay!  this place (USA), although they'd like to believe their country was built on Christian values, have mostly disregarded the Christian holidays when it comes to retail business.  :(

Some shops are allowed to stay open like petrol stations, dairies (cafe's) and shops in tourist areas selling tourist goodies and actually do. So it isn't all dead and burried on these days.

Our experience when we were there in July this year was that you got bags at most shpos, but you had to move to a designated area and pack your own bags. :)  Which is cool

I prefer to take my own homemade bags when shopping and packing them myself. Don't you hate it when tey pack the coffee tin ontop of your freshly baked bread and you get home to find a tortilla like thing in te bottom of the bag.

Grocery shopping will be an adventure for me. It sounds as though most in NZ do a weekly shop rather than the monthly bulk shop that most Saffers are used to. Guess we will have an awful lot of one thing and not enough of another till I adjust.

Lol, so you guys eat a lot of Mexican food  ;D

As we work from home, it is easy for us to zip out to the shops quickly, so we haven't bought monthly groceries for years. We just buy our meat in bulk and go to the shops everyday for whatever else we need when we pick up Candice from school.
