True or false.  After 3 months registered with a GP your consultation rates are reduced?

Ours were reduced immediately, once we got a Work Permit. Ok its was an SA doctor - so I'm not sure what the 'official' line is... We pay a fixed consultation rate of $25 and $8 per prescription (whatever is on there).

We did find though that it generally takes two visits to get anything meaningful (medicine wise) out of the docs. The first time they generally take a 'wait and see if you survive on your own' attitude. Must be 'cause the medical is subsidised - unlike SA where you walk out with shopping trolleys of medicines (provided you're on medical aid of course!)

Call me stupid but its not that cheap is it? I mean if I am still on SA rand for the fist say 2 months this translates into R 128 per consultation? With no medical aid to help? And I have 3 little flue traps....

Talking about Doctors and prescription fees is there anyone out there who has done the move whilst on chronic medication? How do you get around it. Try to take 3 months worth with you and then see a doctor to get it sorted? Will I needto take records form my doctor to say what I am taking and why or do I just tell my new doctor?

How about Medical cover while you are in the transition stage?
We leave work in SA end December and therefore medical aid and if our job offer does not come through and we go cowboy, what are the suggestions for medical insurance for the big things like hospitalisation?

Hey Cranky!
What exactly does this offer you? (I am not a traveller as you may have guessed)

It covers hospitalization, accidents, flight delay and cancellation ect.  If you phone your bank and ask for card devision, then tell them you have booked a flight and want to know how the insurance works.  It is a long list of things they cover and different bank use different insurance companies.  But well worth it.
