UK drivers licence
« on: January 26, 2008, 03:47:29 pm »
Hi All

We've been Londoners for 3 years prior to coming back to SA, and are now heading on to NZ. Hence still have the UK drivers licence (too complex to convert back to SA passport!) - does anyone on here know what the implications are of converting from UK to NZ passport once we get over there?

How soon does one need a car in NZ? Can one initially get around on buses/trains, even in the smaller towns on the North Island?

I'm also very interested in the answer to "how soon" one needs a car in NZ - is public transport okay and cheap enough to get by for a while? Most people landing there and updating via the Kia Ora thread seem to go car hunting as a first priority...is this an important first step?

NZ still have trains for public use in some cities like Wellington.  Very good bus service in Dunedin.  I think it is a personal thing, most people like to have their won transport, it all depends on you.

"If you do have a current overseas driver licence or international driving permit, you can drive using that for a maximum of 12 months  from the date you arrive in New Zealand.  If you wish to drive after one year, you must first gain a New Zealand drive licence." from the Land Transport Website
http://www.ltsa.govt.nz/factsheets/56.html

Not to sure about the UK drivers license.  Should be ok for 12 months

Hope this helps
