Welcome Raithlin and Snoozy!

I'd say you got it the wrong way round... 1 should be the debt, and 2, the lack of knowledge... which really, will be no lack at all in a few days of reading here!  O0  So your main thing is to get rid of debt asap, because you sure don't want to carry debt over here with you.  So hmm... .sell everything and get here!  ;D
lekker sweet as, y'all

I figured that out - but it's a bit more complicated than just selling everything. That said, I read enough to know to get rid of the debt BEFORE coming.  :(

Welcome Snooty and Raithlin

Raithlin - if you're in NZ sooner and not later you can pay of your depts quicker because:

1. Soon your depts will not be worth anything with the exchange rate - you can pay it off 5/1 form here!  O0
2. You'll work better and earn more cause here you sleep at night
3. Your depts might just be lost anyway in the darkness of Eishcom

:gl: with the process - hope to see you guys soon!

Not so sure about the impact of the exchange rate. Living costs are higher in NZ, taxes are higher (so I am told), and salary differences for qual's are not that much different - to be honest, after converting at 5,5, I can well believe that with current salaries in Jhb some people will earn less in Auckland/Wellington...but that's just an opinion. Spoke to an employment agent over there on Monday, also about expected salaries, and that was pretty much the feedback.

Didi - I had thought about that. I got the same idea as Snoozy though - rather sort it out from here, and then it makes it easier to move forward in NZ. No strings attached, as it were.

Yes - you guys are prob right - it is expensive here and posibly better to come once you have a "clear" way.

Just be sure you do not cut it to fine - sometimes one needs to cut your losses and run. What is that song about the gambler?

LOL! Our problem is quite simple, and one I'm sure many Saffers have. Our debt is killing us at the moment, what with interest rates going up, inflation, food prices, etc. Not your problem, and I'm not going to moan about all my problems here. I just wish we could up and go already!  :tickedoff:

Raithlin don't worry it will clear up - we are in the same boat but thinking of going even still we have debt in SA - will ask dear mommy to pay the debt this side out of our NZ DOLLARS - hope we'll manage, but will get through it NO MATTER WHAT  :D

I know what you guys mean.  I'm too scared to walk close to an ATM incase a hand comes out and grabs me cause of what I owe the bank!  That's the problem you see, when the bank manager said "this is your credit limit" I was sure he said "this is your target"  ::)

Question: will having debt in SA affect the acquisition of required documents for NZ PR/visa? Like say, tax clearance, etc.

Also, are there any programmers (.Net) that could share their experiences on job-seeking (both from within NZ, and without)?

as long as your tax returns are up to date, you can get tax clearance quite easily. it willonly be hard to leave if you have a pending judgement against you, but otherwise it's no problem...
