Author Topic: ATTORNEY MOVING TO NZ? (Read 431 times)

Hi

I am new to this forum and also to the idea of possibly emmigrating because of the ever deteriorating situation in SA. Iam a 37 year old attorney/conveyancer practicing in private practice in the Western Cape, SA since 1998. I am married with a wife and two kids (6 and 2 years). My family will have to leave very comfortable surroundings in the hope of securing a better education and future for our two young kids. I will have to sell my shares in our partnership and also property holdings to make the move. I only mention this because I'm afraid that it is not the best time to try and sell this. We are prepared to take the plunge as long as we have prospects of a better future.

I'm very interested to hear form other attorneys who recently made the move. Your axperience in obtaining the necessary further qualifications will help a great deal. Also, I am very interested to find out what the prospects of decent employment is in NZ. For the record I have B.IURIS and L.LB degrees. I was admitted as conveyancer of South Africa during 2002, and as attorney with the right to appear in the Supreme Court of SA during 2003. Any help will be appreciated.

My sister is an attorney presently with the IRD in NZ Auckland. She has been here 8 years and had to redo her degree. It was not easy and took time. The only thing she is sorry about is that she did not make the move sooner.

I have sent your post to her asking her to reply - will post once she does.

In my own case I have left a large smallholding/ paid off house, nanny, gardener, maid and cushy job for less salary, small rental house and I wash my own dishes. I have no money, no home and I ride the bus most days...

But I could not be comfortable anymore as a prisoner in my own home. No matter how stylish the furniture.

I supose it depends what makes you happy at that moment ...

Hallo Abrie

I also just now joined the forum and is amazed by everyones reaction! I am a Educational Psychologist and currently short listed for a job in Auckland. At the moment I do a lot of legal work, re custody matters but sadly have to say "I had enough!" I met a friend through a friend who's dad is an attorney now for 10 years in NZ. According to her he had to studied for 3 years. (Judge Strauss-Pta High Court). I will try to get hold of his e-mail. Hope it can help. My husband is also an attorney but currently in the Financial Industry. If you need to chat to him I can get you two to mail each other. When do you plan to leave?

A friend I had up in Auckland had a brother that is an attorney and I have no idea what he had to do etc, but I do know he is extremely happy here

Thanks for the reply. I'm just getting started with the long process of getting qualifications recognized by the NZ Law Soc. Then there will definitely be lots of studying. After that the job hunt will begin.
