New Zealand vs Australia
« on: February 23, 2008, 07:16:55 PM »
Hi there..

I have been considering immigrating to Australia as an alternative to New Zealand. Anyone of you investigated this? How do these two place compare? any comments, suggestions or advice?

Regards,

~ Pravesh

Aust: hot, dry, more people, more money, lots of Aussies
NZ: cooler, wetter, more pleasant, nicer people, less money but better lifestyle

Do some research.

I prefer NZ. But each to their own.

It is more difficult to get into Oz.  Look whether you will qualify for each country.

If you ask a Kiwi, that they will say too many Ozzies.......well they will have a whole lot more to say ;), but it boils down to too many Ozzies.  If you ask an Australian you gonna get NZ slammed.  Best is to do a some reading up on both countries or go on holiday and make up your own mind.

Yip it has been asked before. BUT for me the relaxed NZ lifestyle and moderate weather is so much better than the better pay, hot dry climate and of course a country full of Ozzies! >:D

I visited the south island in 2003 and I found the youth to be a loud wild bunch and the adults to be reserved bordering on stiffness with an undercurrent of resentment against South-Africans, but then I'm a relatively conservative Afrikaner who sees no shades of grey.

I've read quite a few places that the Kiwi's are friendly people, is this a sentiment shared by both Afrikaner expats and English SA expats, the last of which I would expect to be of similar heritage and thus a closer fit.

resentment? friendly rivalry perhaps. I dont sense it at all. They still go on about the 1981 Springbok tour (white only) and the riots that took place. Perhaps we are perceived as racist, which is often true. There is more resentment towards Asian immigrants. Saffers get off lightly.

Maybe it was worse in the South Island... not nearly as many saffers there I suppose.

As far as the Asians go, when I saw the rate at which they were immigrating into NZ and Aus I expected some side-effects from the locals.  Being flooded by Asians is almost like dumping a few kiwi's in the middle of Africa, what a culture shock :)

The whole issue of NZ vs Australia is really a very personal one.  And you will get as many different views on it as there are people....

But I have heard that it is easier to get into NZ at the moment... you can get in here with a N2 qualification and find a job, whereas it's more difficult in other parts of the world.  There are quite a few people who come to NZ, wait out the time to get citizenship and then go to Australia, but I think that more people who had that intention, actually land up staying in NZ, and canning the Oz idea in the end...

On the other hand, I have a friend who I worked with at two different companies in SA, who came to NZ for 6 weeks in the winter (dunno which areas they visited), didn't like it one bit, and has settled with her family in Oz.  But that is the only person I know that didn't like NZ, and opted for Oz instead after actually being here.

So as others have said, you may want to do your own research, knowing yourself and your likes and dislikes, and then perhaps even doing a holiday and see for yourself....

Oh before I forget.  When you go to visit Oz, they will ask you if you have a criminal record.  Do tell them you didn't know you still needed one.
