Hi there

What is Public Transport like in NZ. Can it be matched to that in Europe?

NO, it cannot be matched. NZ does not have good public transport. The car is King here.

Every town has a good bus service, Auckland and Welly have a train service (welly is good, Auck bad). You will be able to get around but not as quickly as in Europe.

It depends on where you stay.  We go with the ferry to auckland city ( about 500 m from our house) , we stay in half moon bay. (eastern side)  If you are living in Birkenhead or Devonport you can also take the ferry into town (they are in the northern side of Auckland) Busses are all over.  Trains run on the western to the southern side of city, not sure about the route.  Traffic with a car into/out of the city centre in peak hour is a nightmare though.  Not sure what is available in the north shore.

Hi, I am from SA and the public transport is not good here.  The car is also king here.  I currently drive to get to work and back, 2 hours in the moring and 2 hours in the afternoon back and forth.  Will it take the same amount of time to travel in peak traffic in NZ? :help:

Paula from the North they have and are still busy building bus dedicated lanes on the highway.  You can take the bus from the express and leave your car there for the day.  With the traffic and the costs of parking, it just makes more sense to grab your cuppa and a magazine and enjoy the ride.

Petrol is not cheap either, going rate by us is $1.78.

I am pleased to see that with the latest petrol price increases in SA, the petrol costs around about the same per litre!   :(
Please could somebody post information about the public transport in Christchurch - is it any good and how is the traffic?

I am in Wellington and use the Train. It is good and far quicker and cheaper than going by car. It takes me about 0.5 an hour to get to work and we live quite far out. There are also busses but i am not to sure how they are From what i have heard they are also good. The highway gets jammed up in peak time but is still flowing. Not sure how long it takes to get into town

haven't used public transport in Chch but there's buses every where, so it seems good. Depending on what you are used to in SA travelling times from and to work can be between 15 minutes and 1 hour, that is if you stay around 40 plus km from town. I think on average you will spend 30 minute comuting to town or back. By kiwi stardards a long time .. well in Chch anycase.

Traffic can become congested but we live throug it ... not nearly as bad as in SA though.

Alta, how much does the ferry cost you to get from half moon bay to Auckland city?  I just looked on google earth and it seems pretty far.
