« on: April 15, 2008, 04:29:14 pm »
How does medical stuff work in NZ?

Are there medical aids?

We've applied for 3 year work visas and start work in May. We are two adults and 1 toddler - what do we do to get ourselves covered medically?
Applied for work permit 14/04/2008
EOI submitted 20/04/2008
EOI selected 23/04/2008
ITA received 05/05/2008
Work permit approved 27/05/2008
Arrived in NZ 31/05/2008
PR received 01/10/2008

Private medical aid is not that expesive could be around $95 per month depending on each individual sitaution. The state medical system is fair, so private medical aid is not used that much.

Johan, why would a person go for private Medical aid when the state medical is ok?  Are there specific things you need to be on private medical for eg. dentistry or something?

the doctors are good, but the hospitals are slow. if i had a good salary i would consider private health care, then you get the best
expect good things

Some people have private med aid so they can have elective surgery....no waiting lists....for example a hip replacement. Also for dentists. Some people want their own room in hospital.....and no waiting.

I broke my finger....had a plate inserted with surgery....2 days in hospital.....didnt cost a cent. In SA 2 days in hospital and 1.5 hour surgery etc would have costs thousands of rands.

it all depends on where you want to go when you need a doctor. Are you prepared to do the waiting thing in hospital do you want to see an outside specialist etc etc. For my immigration medicals I had to a specialist on immigrations request I had to under go Cat scans I had to under go a scope all just to tell immigration there is nothing wrong with me. My total cost for medical examination with the specialist and all the prcedures just came to under $4000. Could not had any of these done in state hospital. So out of it learned that you could need a medical aid at times. I think it would be a personal thing when con sidering for medical aid.

All I am realy trying to say is that specialists and dentistry are expensive. I broke a tooth down here on biltong of all things ... to have it fixed properly is going to cost around $2500 ... at this stage I'll go with the temp filling until I have the funds to do the whole thing ,,, and just munch away on my biltong on the other teeth.
