Crime in NZ
« on: May 14, 2008, 07:09:54 AM »
Hey all.

It's been a while, but need to thank you all first for all the advice, help a great lot.

So the ball is rolling, will be landing there in Jan 2009.

I have one ? though. what is the crime like there, I've pulled the National Crime Stats April 2008 and It's a bit concerning to me.

Murder - 45 per 10 000 population recorded.= 19 027 in 2007 ( 4 228 170 people in NZ / 10 000 = 422.82 x 45 )

This is high as you have only got 4 228 170 people in NZ.
South africa has 47.9 Million people and we only had 17 867 murders for the 2007 year.

WHAT IS CONFUSING is that the people and newspapers in NZ claim figures of only 88 murders in 2007

Can any one clear this up for me???

Any other assistance on crime would also be appreciated.

THANX

what?????? 19000 murders???? :heeha:   :help:  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

NZ averages 40-70 murders a year. Mostly gang or domestic violence related in poor Pacific Island and Maori areas.

I think you have misread the stats.

NZ had 45 murders in 2007. Not 88. And 41 of these murders were RESOLVED in 2007!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is an amazing success rate. How many of SA's thousands of murders are resolved.

There are very very few unsolved murder cases in NZ. Most are caught and locked up pretty soon.

Here is a link to police website.

http://www.police.govt.nz/district/central/release/3817.html

And some figures seem high. Remember a spraypainting walls is a crime and recorded as a crime stat........

I am sorry I am posting again. I just cant believe that you could think that NZ has so many murders? Why would thousands and thousands of Saffers move to a country with a murder rate worse than SA??

I think the 45 per 10000 you read meant 45 murders in 2007.

Am I getting too defensive of NZ already?

Kevin, a good friend of mine (sal jy nou post asb :knuppel2:) was in the forensics dept in SA.  This person can't get a job here cause they literally do in a year what she did in a week.  They don't have enough work for the 4 people they do have.  Pack your bags, you are gonna love it here. O0

Hi Kevin,

Just my 2cents - The stats you read about in SA are not representative of the TRUE crime statistics.  The true crime stats are withheld from the public.  We only see what they want us to see. ;)

For what it's worth... with the murder of a Scottish tourist in January, the NZ police had a team of 50 policemen on the case... (and in May a suspect was apprehended). My nephew is an investigator in the SAPS and he has more than 50 cases at any time on his desk...  to add fuel to the fire: in SA we also have a rate of 120 per 100 000 for rape... and one of my classmates neighbours was hijacked two days ago... isn't that getting way too close to home.  :'(

Did anyone else see the front cover of the Natal Mercury yesterday?

http://www.themercury.co.za/index.php?fSectionId=2873&fDate=2008-05-19&fEdition=1

Im not a subscriber so cannot read the story online but when I saw the article in the paper I was in shock and disbelief. Are we going back to the tyre-burning days?

You definitely miss-read the stats. There were 45 murders for the whole year in NZ for 2007.

On a light note, my cousin works for the prisons here in NZ. He reckons they are a real bunch of softies. One night they had a TV program on where this guy went to speak to the gangs at Polsmor prison and the NZ prisoners watched this. The next day my cousin told a prisoner that they are starting a prisoner exchange program where the prisoners who behave badly will be sent to Polsmor for a month. They were all as meek as kittens after that! Haha!  ;D
