Global peace index
« on: May 21, 2008, 07:50:37 AM »
I was reading news headlines and came across what I thought to be a very interesting article. There is a survey that was done last year and this year called the Global Peace Index. It shows how peaceful a country is. It is based on quite a bit of criteria but in essence you would want to live in the countries at the top of the list.
The 2008 survey consisted of 140 countries. SA came in at 116th and NZ was 4th.

Here is the link to the survey if you want to see how it was rated.

And people ask why we want to leave SA. The statistic that shocked me was life expectancy. In SA it is 47.7 years and in NZ it is 79.6 years  :o

Interesting thanks.  I was quite surprised to see Aus so far down on the list, I would've thought it would have been in the top 10

Try and explain all this to some South Africans that doesn't want to leave and tell them that SA is a "safe" place and NZ is *** and that the guys that did the survey "must have" made a mistake to put NZ SO high up on the list. NZ is NOT so good, and SA is not so BAD.  :D:idiot2: ,
And all of us must be making the biggest mistakes of our lives. Stupid us.... Cheribaai,  :'( , SAKB.

I agree Nolan, it is very sad.  It would be interesting to see what the picture looked like 20 years ago, and what it will look like in twenty years time :-\

I have been here only about three months.  In this time, my bloodpressure has dropped, I sleep at night, the stress is gone, I see more of my loved ones, I spend more time in nature/parks, I walk in the middle of the city without being scared or looking over my shoulder, I can use public transport and get home totally relaxed, I can watch the news and laugh at the topics!, I can eftpos at almost every shop - even the diary, etc etc

I live in a city, in a suburb, but can still cycle to work because it is not too far from city centre and there is dedicated cycle lanes.

ANYBODY telling me that SA is "not so bad" and NZ is "***" are living in SA and are slowly being "boiled" to death.  South African (and most third-world countries for that matter) citizens are being robbed (in more ways than one) of a basic lifestyle that everyone in this world should enjoy - and it is only when you come to a place like this beautiful island that you realise what you have been missing...
