Hi tictag, welcome to the site!
A lot of people open a bank a/c in NZ before leaving SA as it's the easiest way to get your money out.
If you use the search facility on the site you will find lots of posts on this subject!

welcome to the site tictag! :gl: with your plans.  There are certain amounts you can take with you depending on whether you are immigrating or going on holiday etc.... like Wendy said, best to use the search facility, because this topic has been discussed under various threads before O0 Oh yes! use the bookmark facility to bookmark anything you may think you have to go back to later ;)

It Depends on how much you want to bring out. What the bank knows about your venture to NZ the way you left SA one way ticket with PR or Work permit how many family you have that you can trust after you left SA. This is all factors that could determine how much money you can bring out.

Think about buying a car down here before you leave SA. This could be arranged. Pay for your accomondation before you leave. Get the right bank and contacts in the bank.
