 :heeha: :heeha:

Is everybody aware of the danger lurking beneath NZ??? The movement of the Tectonic plates and the daily, YES DAILY earthquakes?

I'd love to have some feedback from those already in NZ on how they are experiencing the earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and landslides?

Did some reading on: http://www.geonet.org.nz   and

http://www.gns.cri.nz

I was very surprized at how often earthquakes take place and also a bit worried for the future quakes of 7 to 8 magnitude.

are you serious? :2funny:  "I'd love to have some feedback from those already in NZ on how they are experiencing the earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and landslides?"

today we had 3 earthquakes, a small eruption just after lunchtime, and then a tsunami after dinner, oh, and that damn landslide too! :heeha:

I think since 1800s only a handful of people have died in earthquakes or eruptions in NZ.

On a serious note (this has been discussed before if you search), NZ is earthquake prone (Gisborne 2007- had a small quake-caused a bit of damage), You are only really affected in Gisborne, Napier, Hastings,Bay of Plenty, and Wellington. And then only every 50 years do you get a serious one.

Last time Auckland had an eruption was about 800 years ago. Rangitoto Island erupted in the sea off Auckland.

When I lived in Rotorua last year I felt 3 tremors. Felt like the quakes you get in JHB from the mines.

remember that most of the dots on that geonet map represent quakes that cannot be felt.

That's a relieve O0

I was a bit concerned for a moment.  How does House and Land insurance cater for damages during quakes?  Do you pay more in your monthly premiums or is it standard part of the insurance?

I am also looking into costs for Medical Aid and was wondering if anyone could recommend any?

I think it is all standard.

Med aid....again it has been discussed here if you just search you will find all the info.

I dont have med aid nor do most people I know. State healthcare is free for hospitals and heavily subsidised for doctors and medicines.

We have been in Napier for all of 3 weeks and I have not experienced any earthquakes, landslides etc and I don't think there has been anything serious here since the 1930's.  Even then most of the damage was caused by gas left on in 2 pharmacies that led to huge fires.  Although I do know they have emergency plans put in place.  The kids at school are taught about them and I think the people are better educated now than they were then.
All in all the natural disasters could not put me off coming to this beautiful country.
On the medical side we have no medical aid but have registered with a GP so that in 3 months time we will get subsidised health care.

I'm much more afraid of the natural distasters occurring frequently in SA.

In the 2 years and 7 months I've been here (Half in Auckland and half in Chch), I've only ever felt one very small earthquake............. I just thought it was a ghost moving my chair , the rest of the family didn't even  feel it and I had to look up on the internet to prove it O0

Better to be killed by a massive act of God like a volcanic eruption or big earthquake than be killed by someone who wants your cellphone....

I read somewhere that a lot of South Africans immigrating to other countries, when landing on the other side, are diagnosed with the same conditions that soldiers suffer when returning from war (Diagnosed with Stress+High Bloodpressure in SA = Post Traumatic War Syndrome in other peaceful countries) .  Don't know how true that is but if we could live in war conditions I guess an earthquake is not going to make any difference...

most countries with a murder rate over 20000 people per year are in a state of civil war.  SA is not, apparently?!! :(

NZ is very laid back. I very seldom lose my temper or feel very stressed. In comparison I would arrive at work after having several major temper tantrums with taxis incidents. You live with very high stress levels in SA and its easy to snap at little things.

My back door might be unlocked right now    :o :o :o  BUT .......I am warm in bed.....so not going to bother checking......so what? no one is coming to kill me. I find doors left unlocked on every day or two at home.
