I'm glad to say I've had my first "left-the-door-open-with-everything-still-there" moment in New Zealand.  Just two nights ago, we accidently left the front door open and only found out the next morning.  Best of all, you don't go into a state of panic about the "what could have happened"!

I also didn't think I would do that soon, during the day when I am home alone I leave the back door open but lock the fly screen.  Anyway last weekend we went out and left the sliding door open slightly - not just unlocked.  The laptop and pc sit right next to the door - Still there!
Oh, and we have apparently had 2 earthquakes since we have been in Hawkes Bay - I never felt a thing!

Apperently there's around 38 earthqauckes a day in NZ ... in the just over a year we've baan haven't felt one yet. The worst we saw ws last year after the wind storm hit Auckland but more to the rural area. Couple of tree been uprooted and a lot of rubbish washed to shore, and that was it.

My kids causes more damage than that .... so yeah for all coming and fearing quackes or wanting to experience it ... I'll rent you my boys (They don't come cheap)  >:D

Johan, are your kids earthquakes or tornadoes  :D
Been here for 6 months and felt nothing yet.
Left doors/windows open or unlocked countless times and nothings gone yet.

Hi Mandy  ... they're both .... and be clad they've not hit your town yet .... we do try to contain them within the vacinity of our yard ... maybe that's the reason you havn't had the frightning experience  ... yet ... but after a while you get used to it specially when the blood pressure needle reaches devestating code 1 emergency status, .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. but  :knuppel2: do tend to neutralise the situation somehow.

Is everybody aware of the danger lurking beneath NZ??? The movement of the Tectonic plates and the daily, YES DAILY earthquakes?

I'd love to have some feedback from those already in NZ on how they are experiencing the earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and landslides?

Did some reading on: http://www.geonet.org.nz   and

http://www.gns.cri.nz

I was very surprized at how often earthquakes take place and also a bit worried for the future quakes of 7 to 8 magnitude.

we lived in Wellington for around 3 years which is also known as the earthquake city here - but in all that time I maybe felt only 2 of them, and it was over so quick I didn't realise it until it was gone.  They say a lot of smaller ones are better than a few big ones only.  As for landslides, yes you do get those in some places when there is a lot of rain but usually it would affect houses that are on hills.  As for tsunamis, well never experienced this before.

They are quite active on the TV and stuff to help people prepare for disasters and always share with people what supplies would be needed in an emergency and just the other day we got a pamphlet telling us how to spot a tsunami and how to react.
