Gas and Electricity
« on: July 09, 2008, 12:19:26 am »
Just a warning that these costs go up considerably in the winter.  During the summer, our electricity and gas bill was around $150 a month.  Now during the winter, it has doubled.  We run a gas heater in the passage for half the day, another gas heater in the lounge for a few hours, and an electrical heater in the basement during the day, and in our bedroom at night.
Most houses are NOT insulated (crazy I know!), and so one has to use more gas/electricity to heat the home.

Just thought you'd like to put that in your budget!

Ditto WendyH, its bitterly cold in Roto as well. I'm glad we're not closer to the snow mountains like Taupo. I think you freeze your butt of in Taupo today. My black bus was white with the ice yesterday. I even took a couple of photo's. Cheers from a freezing Rotorua  :D , SAKB

We are waiting for our first power bill!  We have a kent heater and bought half a truck of wood - $95 which will last us well into the summer.
You guys should come this side of the ranges the really cold weather seems to be stopped by them.  Although the southerlies are icy!

We are also awaiting our first power bill since moving to Chch.  We have a heat pump and a Kent Wood Burner.  Still need to organise some wood in case we need to run the fire.
Chch is by far warmer than Dunedin, even though the temperature is only 2 - 3° higher.

Thanks for the info. Your summer bills do not sound that excessive compared to my current Electricity bill. Do you guys pay extra for water? and do you also pay rates and taxes?

A friend of mine in Auckland gave us the advice to open a bank account for these things that you need to pay montly.  What she does is: she pay weekly a certain about that they worked out, into the bankaccount and then their's no surprises.

I usually pay an extra $50 - $100 into my electricity account every now and again so for winter I have not had to pay much more than my usual bill.  Our water is free in Cambridge but I am not sure if that is all over NZ.

We do pay rates and taxes - if you own the house...

Water - depends on where and which city.  Hamilton water is free, but just outside in Te Kowhai, it's not for free.  I think my sis in North Shore pays for water, not sure.

I've used the tumbledryer all through summer as well (got too spoiled in the USA to bother with hanging outside - I forget about the stuff, and then it gets dewed on overnight! ), the only electrical heater we've run is the little fan-heater.  I really can't see where the excessive bill came from... and to be honest, I've not been keeping a regular tab on the meter readings for myself.  :-\
