Selling everything
« on: July 30, 2008, 09:12:24 AM »
Hi,
We are at this stage waiing for our documents for our EOI application. We will have to put our house up for sale but when do we do it? We don't want to sit without a place top stay before we move to NZ. We also do not want to move with our belongings and will therefore have to sell everything. Is this a good decision? :help:

Depends on when you plan to come over.  House market very slow and the average selling time is between 6 months to a year, unless you are very lucky

Hey Alilister. This is definitely one of the biggest decisions you will make. We were also in the position where we were in two minds about taking over a container or selling every thing you own.
At the end of the day we decided to sell. This is a very emotional process, especially when it came to parting with the PETS (2 Persian cats and a Rotweiler).
We used the internet to advertise..... and believe me it went quick.
We are now staying in a house with only 3 beds, which in fact does not belong to us any more.
The house……….that’s another story. With the interest rates at the current level, we are battling to sell. The price is reduced, but still no buyers. Will most properly put tenants in the house.
The way I see it, you could go home this afternoon and your house is emptied out anyway.
Hope this help a bit……….just know your not alone……

yup, it sure is your decision but just to let you know what we are doing...

OH leaves next week for NZ to get a job - we will follow when he has WP
house is on the market, 3 weeks no buyers yet
cars - trying to sell for 2 months - NOTHING - peaugot & bakkie
booked movers to come pack all our stuff for container on 28 August - very ambitious but hoping all will fall into place

OMG - this is the most scary thing i have ever done - but i am sure the reward of safety and freedom for my family is worth the heartache

Hi

We are also selling everything - 1 business, 2 motorbikes, 1 car, townhouse + furniture.  We are only going to pack a pallet of some personal and sentimental stuff to ship out to us at some stage.  We are also going with just our suitcases, money and that's it!

Business looks like it just about sold!  Motorbikes and townhouse - we are working on - and the car will have to be last (we need the wheels for a while).  The furniture, we are not really worried about selling - can either stay with townhouse or if someone wants something, they can make us an offer??  If the townhouse does not sell, we'll rent out.

As you say OMG scary stuff!!

We will also just leave for our new life packed in suitcases.

Maayybee a small box or something with some sentimentals in (Pay for a corner in someones container to NZ if possible). We have been in contact with Solidarity union and will donate the furniture that we cannot sell to the helping hand fund. At least we know it will go the right people.

We also have a collection of Orchids that we build up since 1996 that we have to sell  :'( :'(

Our EOI was selected in Feb, and we were hoping to leave for NZ end 2008, if all goes well with our application. We put our house on the market in May, thinking it would take at least six months to sell, and then, it sold after a month! The new owner wanted early occupation, so we are now renting. The funny thing is, we are a very cautious family, hate change, and were terrified of the moves involved, and yet, here we are in a rental, and it isn't the end of the world.

I'm starting to think the more you try and control this process and "do it right", the harder it will be for you when the timing goes haywire, as it is sure to do at some stage!

It is a very hard process and a very personal choice.  I thought I was not a materealistic person then we started packing.  I threw away a lot but there were certain things that I HAD to pack.  Now that we are here and our container has arrived I am so pleased with having all my personal belongings.  It really has helped me feel more at home.
With regards to selling your property I would put it on the market ASAP.  I was also afraid of selling our home to soon but it worked out perfectly and if you are not in a rush then there is more time for negotiations.
This is a life changing move in more ways than you will ever imagine. All the best

We found out this week-end that our house is officially sold, the Bank approved the buyers loan, my first reaction was tears :'( I didn't think it would go so quick. The new owner wants to move in on the 1 st of September. DH resigned from his work on Monday and we will be buying his ticket on Friday for the beginning of September. He will be flying out a month earlier then expected, I'm not looking forward to the time apart, but like someone on the forum said, the sacrifises we are making now for our children will pay off in the end. My girls and I won't be renting, we will be staying with my folks and my sister as her husband will be flying out at the end of September. My sister and I and my girls will only fly out the end of October :(

I know it's  difficult, the most difficult thing to do !!  But believe me, if you take one step at a time, you'll get it done. Just one step NOT 2. Just keep doing the next thing that needs to be done. Keep on walking.......

Sterkte, ons weet hoe dit voel, eendag sal almal terug kyk en dink, sjoe, ek kan nie glo ons was so braaf nie.

Yip, we had a special box for the medals and all my kids trophies.  They HAD to go, that was not negotiable.  I have been out running a few times - and it certainly is easier on the lungs than that JHB air.  I am nowhere near fit enough to run even a half at the moment but I believe there are some great races in HB around the vineyards and also a marathon in Taupo which I would imagine will be really great.  Maybe next year we will look at Syd or AKl - just get back into the running first.  There is a great gravel path that runs along a river at the back of our place and it goes all the way down to the sea and back - I believe it is 9 km one way so I am looking forward to doing that one.
How is your running coming on?
