Next years travel allowance
« on: August 07, 2008, 02:35:05 pm »
If I leave from SA with WP and have taken my R500 000 (I wish!) travel allowance, can I while still overseas, request another R500 in the new year, as part of next year's travel allowance ? In other words, has anyone gotten trevelers cheques, etc. from their bank after they left, in the next year, as part of their "travel allowance", or is it just easier to try and do it the foreign investment way with tax clearance, etc. ?

As the bank wants to see a plane ticket to issue your travel allowance, do they actually check if you've got a return ticket, or is a one-way also OK ?

ajp Syd did this with no problem. He sent me a copy of his plane ticket ( return) and I took it to the bank signed all the forms and the money was electronically transferred from his Absa account into his National bank account. He did not take extra as in next years allowance but took the balance of his travel allowance for this year.

As far as I understand you can transfer on your travel allowance through the year but may not exceed the allowance. If the year has gone you'll need to return to SA to activate the allowance for the next year. Rather stupid but what can one do.

Johan is correct, you have to return to SA before you can take out the next travel allowance.

Just a reminder:

It's 500 000 per taxpayer + (I can't remember the amount per child)
I took travel allowance for my wife, my son and myself
That got most of my money over...
