We are trying to do it the official way but looking at the EOI stats it looks like those in NZ already with jobs or job offers get priorityn in the selection stakes (????)
so who knows which way is better.
I thought doing it the right way would give you a better chance but obviously makes no difference.

For us it was too much of a risk to do it any other way otherthan on PR.  It took a long time ( almost 2 years) but for us it is better knowing that we are now secure in NZ.
I could not cope with having to stress about if my WP would get renewed etc. A friend of ours appliedto have her WP renewed at the beginning of October and finally on Monday was told that she had been appointed a case officer. In the mean time she is still working but now illegally as her permit has expired. The uncertainty is driving her nuts!

Yes I am too much of a sissy to try the risky route !
I have my children to think of and it is just to much of an upheavel to take a chance and failing
they are not little 17 & 15 so not as resiliant as little ones

How about some new options here, like coming over on work permit with job secured, and finalising PR here..?

marcia,
look on trade me, seek and various other job sites, there are always jobs advertised for electricians, especially in the smaller towns - just send out as many applications as there are jobs advertised and something will happen - just have the perseverance and patience - there will always be a need for skilled labour here

There was a job advertised on trade me.  This is for all over maintenance, but listed under plumbing.  Great perks, they are based in Wellington, seems like you even get housing with the job (van/mobilephone etc)  If you are not qualified, they are willing to train you.  As far as I know the listing closes end Jan (friends were interested at a stage)

We have to have or application in by early feb, but have decided to go the PR route as we have a child who will cause a medical glitch and there is no way we could have gone over with her as they would not have given her a student visa. Also, knowing this could take longer means that we can't do the job finding thing knowing we couldn't take up the position on time and in our situation, we can't go over without the rest of the family to star working, for too many reasoins.  This way, we are giving it a go and at least we will know within a year without any stress.  Rather expensive, but we don't want to always have wondered if they would have accepted us.
If ours was uncomplicated and especially without kids, I would say DEFINItely give the cowboy route of WP route a go.

I came cowboy style, myself with 2 kids (5 and 2) at the time, that was 2 years ago, got 3 year work permit and have my residency application in with immigration.  Now I wait for PR to come through.  Would never have got in otherwise as I didnt have a degree, just work experience as a PA.

I was very lucky to find the company that I am with that is doing they can to help with PR.

arrived Feb 07,
work permit June 07
PR Application handed in Sep 08
