Leave the language behind
« on: December 04, 2008, 10:41:19 PM »
I was just sent a link to some Youtube videos of Afrikaans songs... some of them are "cute", but oh boy... most of them are just ... ohh.... disgusting... it's not about the crime... it's about the language.  If it's come down to, all that people can say in South Africa, is V****L this and V***L that, then I certainly don't want to ever go back there, and please, if you're coming here, leave those words behind you.  It made me feel so DIRTY to listen to it, that after the 4th mention of that word, which only had 4 other words between them,  I just cut the video.
We recently had somebody stay with us in our home for a few weeks, and his language was just like that in the beginning.  I asked him if it had to do with his trade or do all South Africans now speak like that, and he answered that it was the stress...well, I made it clear I didn't want him speaking like that around my kids, or around me for that matter.  10 years ago, my colleagues still respected me as a female, and wouldn't swear in my presence... now it's even the women that talk like that...

Sorry, I'm ranting now... and if you're offended... sorry, but I felt offended having to listen to that...and sad that the beautiful young Afrikaans language has been raped like that.

oh I'll duck now! :-X

I agree, but its not only the adults.  The f.. word is used by most kiwi kids as everyday language.  We had a lady from ESOL at our school the other day and she said what she picked up from the asian kids is that they learn the swear words first, as they hear it on the playground before they can even speak english.

Wel , as ek sulke goed soos die vir grootmense gese^ het,  was ek al dood gemoer deur die naaste grootmense.  Deesdae kyk die grootmense net weg en jou eie ouers word besoek deur wylsyn as jy hulle op die boud raps.  Mens voel dan mets self 'n paar v. woorde will af roll.

Colleen I hear you!!  I too can't stand swearing!
It's so bad, my neighbours son came to play and was using the sh..... word so much that I had to tell him that we don't use that kind of language in this house!  It stopped.... for a while he wasn't here then he comes for another play and is taking the Lords name in vain... well my blood was boiling... I again told him off.... and he is only 6 years of age.... Makes me wonder what the language is like in his home... I have met his parents and had them visit us, they don't seem to us foul language.... but you don't know what happens behind closed doors.

Actually, you're right there, Mertz!  I guess I'm a little "protected" in that I have not entered the working world here yet.  My hubby said he has a few colleagues that swore so bad, he could hardly stand it, and then didn't realize he was picking it up sub-consciously himself, until I pulled him up short at home!  He then, in his review with his boss a few months ago, mentioned this to him, and told his boss that it makes the workplace an unpleasant place to be.  Well, you know what happened?  The boss listened!  He instituted a "No Swearing Tax" box, and if a colleague is caught swearing or using God's name in vain, he has to pay "tax".  My hubby said the whole atmosphere has changed and is a lot more pleasant in their division!  Now they just have to work on the team across the passage!  ;D

Hi,

Swearing normally indicates a lack of brains and without no decent vocabulary - Full stop

It's bad in SA, but way worse over here in NZ...and it's on a real personal level, seems to be especially in the schools (at least some)... One of the bad things happening to the first world...definitely lack of brains :)

Vocabulary seems to be big problem...... if you don't know what to say or how to say it just swear....
or better still use the old adage 'if you don't have any thing nice to say don't say any thing'

Goodness me!!!! just had a listen to the song!!! eweeee!!!!! LOOK thos who say they NEVER say a bad word is really skeinheilig, but that's awfull!!!!!
I also put it off not even a quarter through....nee wat my ore is ook nie asblikke nie.
I worked in the motor trade and there they used to swear allot.  Also picked up on a few naughty words, but its not something that's used every day, and working very hard on trying to QUIT...hehehe but some day there is just no other word that fits better... >:D

OK no serious...that's not good, and very distateful.

And noooo we dont talk like that around here!!!!! Swearing happens everywhere, you just have to watch some action movies to realize that.

But why that person feels the need to create a thing like that on Youtube beats me.... :(

The swearing is definately much worse here. I am dreading the language my son is going to pick up.
Let me put it to you this way... my son is 15 months old and his kiwi grandparents swear like truck drivers in front of him. They're not bad people but their language is shocking and they are showing no signs of curbing it in front of him.
My parents never swore in front of us, and just the thought of my grandparents swearing! My sweet little ouma and oupa! Never!

No one seems the least bit embarrassed at having sworn in front of my son. Ok, I admit that I have had my days of swearing not so long ago (being 22 years old) but I have been trying since I found out I was pregnant to stop completely. And I am truly embarrassed if I swear in front of someone's child or and older person. Even my in-laws...lol
