General Practitioners (GP) in or near Auckland CBD
« on: June 16, 2009, 01:44:58 am »
Can anyone recommend a good GP in or near the Auckland CBD area?

My hubby is diabetic and before he can go to a specialist he needs to be referred to them by a GP - any suggestions would be really appreciated - preferably near the CBD or on a bus route if a bit of a distance out...

Thanks...

So, it looks like we have a GP (hopefully).  ;)

Next question - can anyone recommend a good dentist in or near Auckland CBD - in this case please don't suggest anyone from google searches - we have done that already and the dentist my DH went to, he is very much not happy with and has to get his tooth redone - so can anyone please recommend a dentist that they use or know of one that a friend uses in or near the CBD?

Hi Saturn_Moon,

Know you said you're in Auckland CBD, but if you still need a Dr, and want/can go to the North Shore, I can really recommend Medical Centre @ Apollo www.apollohealth.co.nz

We used them 3 months ago, and I will definately return/keep them as our GP.  8)

They're open 8h00-20h00. We saw Dr Henry Swart - a SA GP.  O0

Hi S&M, I go to City Med for my GP, they are at the bottom of Albert Street in the CBD. I am happy there, I see Dr Donna Marshall.  I havent been to a dentist yet, but heard of a reasonable one on the Shore in Birkenhead - aparantly doesnt charge an arm and a leg but I like I said havent been yet.

O0 Thanks on the info for the doctor ks11 - will check them out as well - they are also around the corner from us.

Hopefully we can find a dentist nearby because we don't have our own transport, so we will have to try and go for someplace near the CBD as the scooters we are using cannot go on motorways so the Northshore is unfortunately out of the question.

We went to Quay Street A&E close to the Vector arena. We registered with them and once funded will only pay $16 per visit. We had to go to Queen Street for some blood tests and I noticed that they charge more than double, even if you are funded.

The doctor we saw was dr Tyson, was very impressed with him. There is also an ex-SA doctor who is apparently great

Thanks gleroux  O0

My husband has already been to those doctors but he went to the one whose specific interest was in diabetes - I will be needing to go soon so it is nice to have found doctors.

He had also been referred to a good dentist and has already gone - they did a really great job and I will be needing to see them soon too.

Now just to find an optometrist... I will speak to the GP and see who they might suggest I go and see - I have noticed a very large one on Quay Street so might go and check them out...

Barry and Beale in Queen street great optometrist. Two South Africans running it. Allen Saks and Rob Allen. Allen Saks was my optometrist in South Africa ( Saks and Taylor ) when I got contacts in 1982. He left for NZ in the nineties - caught up with him in Auckland again. They are not the cheapest but definitely the best.

wow, thanks for that Mertz  O0

I wear contacts as well and it would be great to go to someone I know I can rely on - I would rather pay than go to someone dodgy because these are my eyes and I will not take any short cuts on the care of them.

Will look into it and see if I can afford them and how much my medical insurance will be willing to cover...

Really recommend Dr. Andrew Grobelar, Symonds Street Medical Centre, 82 Symonds Street Auckland Central. Convenient parking in front.
Also ex-saffer and really excellent doctor.  Not the kind that chases you through the appointment but actually listen to what you have to say.

Thanks El

Was actually looking at going to a different GP (I'm assuming that is who he is? as opposed to a Dentist or Optomostrist?) because my DH admitted that he wasn't entirely happy with the doctor he went to at Queen Street Medical (although the specialists he was referred to for his diabetes are fantastic).

So I think I will give then a call and make an appointment as I need to see one this week.

We use Millhouse Medical Centre in Millhouse Road for GP's. None of us have had a problem there.

For a dentist I saw just after we landed in Jan 08 and went to the East Care (24 hour emergency).  For dental they operate like a normal dentist with booking.  Saw a very young asian guy but he was absolutely brilliant.
