the more i think about this case, the more i get puzzled.  Why would someone who was in police custody,  break out of police custody, and only hand himself back to police vollentarily,  when some  dude from  writes a letter to the president.

I read about the Paterson story for the first time on this thread - and needless to say the horror of an attack was brought home but so the complexities of emigration. I have just put down a work of non- fiction called Ways of Staying by Kevin Bloom - brilliantly written - and therin he extensilvely features the Patterson matter - it does not mention the issue of returning - most probably published before it was a possiblilty.
Does anyone know what happened - has Paterson returned.For those inclined - it is heavy stuff - and most probably best untouched - Blooms book makes a big impression.
