We are a family of four and have a bond to pay. We live on $800  - $ 1000 for food per month. Our phone and Internet is at most $140 per month, including unlimited free calls to SA. Electricity is $170. That's around $400 to $500 per week in total ($26 000 for the year). We earn about $55 000 p a, and we have managed to save a bit. Granted, we eat only healthy, simple food, and we try not to waste in any way, but we are definitely doing fine.

But yes, it really, really depends on how you define "standard of living". I think the mean average wage is around $26 000 per annum in Auckland, so $55 000 is double what other people are earning here. It might be tight by SA standards, but you won't starve.

These figures come off ENZ for average earnings:

The average NZ male employee works 37.9 hours per week with an additional 1.2 hours paid overtime to earn $1,010 per week.

The average NZ female employee works 35.6 hours per week with an additional 0.5 hours paid overtime to earn $816 per week.

AAAARRRGGGGGGHHHHH DON'T SAY THESE THINGS !!!!!
all the salary sites I have looked at say electricians earn 55-60k p/a I have 2 teenagers so will we cope.
we have always had our own bussiness and I am a housewife (with expensive hobbies & a maid)
but we have never been "flush" there are always things like wages and vat and src's and workmans comp and uif and innsurance and public liability and in Dec we never have money cause it's leave pay and bonuses month for everyone but the boss.
so I am used to being frugal (such an ugly word that) but you guys are scaring me to death.  :o
SO will we be able to live or not?

Ah one of those question to which there is not one exact answer firstly because we are all different in our needs, find ourselves in different situations and secondly because it is a question for most of whether the trades of are worth it. I have one set of friends who are doing better money wise but for most I encountered factually they were worse off money wise.
It would be interesting to know what Members who posted views earned in SA in rand and how they came out.
From our perspective I got $78 000 and my other half had not yet got work - but assuming she got say $40,000 we realised if we wanted to live close to town in Auckland we could just not make it. We ended up being miserable and came home.
Others scrape and get through.

55 is fine if it is part of the family income.

i just think from my experience, 55 would not be enough.

We are currently living on $52 500 p/a. I have two young kids.

Our rental is $450 p/w and rent in Howick.

We get through by watching the specials. You won't survive if you are going to shop for everything at Foodtown. But you can make huge savings if you watch the meat specials at MAD butcher, Aussie Butcher, etc.

You will have to watch your pennies though.

Bear in mind this may be your one and only option to get the family into NZ. Once here you can look further.
Regards

Hill

Your biggest single expense should be your rent, so if you can keep that down then I say you can survive on that salary.

I wont be the one looking like i am negative.

I say what i do because of experience.  Your experience might be different so my opinion might differ to other people's.

so... take the advise you feel most comfortable with and accept that as your choice you made.

I agree 100% with HILL!!! Sorry ronaldd, but we are getting by with a $100 pw for food and we are 3.  Looking at the specials helps heaps.

We can even afford some chips and home brand cookies  :P Last week I bought $70 of mince for it was so cheap.  No need to say there was no chips or cookies, but we will have mince for a while.  Maybe get a boerewors recipe and make some real wors.

Its all about lifestyle!!!

God bless.

Unfortunately I have to agree with ronaldd  :(

But as I said before, that is the case for us - a family of (almost) 4 adults.

If your hubby is here already, get him to look at rentals, groceries etc... that will give you a far better idea of what to expect.

We live in Hamilton but here's our monthly budget anyway:

Hubby's salary (with OT) - avg 4000
My salary (no OT) - 2000

Rent - 1160
Phone, cell phones , internet - 170
Sky - 65.50
Groceries - 800
Entertainment - 150
Power - 150 (winter 200)
Insurances - 130 (household, 2 x cars and life ins)
GE Money (interest free loan) - 120
Petrol - 100
Public Transport - 10
Unexpected bills - 200 (dr visit, taking the cat to the vet, Rego)
Baby Gear - 150 (baby due next week!)

We still managed to save my salary each fortnight. We do our bulk shopping at pak n' save, buy our veggies from the fruit and veg shop, and always keep an eye out for specials.
We don't drink, smoke or gamble or drive big expensive cars - but that is just our lifestyle choice.
Also, we are well aware that now that I am finished work, that our spending power is going to be greatly reduced with us been on one income again. Hence why we have worked so hard to save as much as we can for when baby arrives... working for families will only give us $40 a week!

I have to agree with what Nolan said also that your rent is the single biggest factor in your budget.
If you look on trademe at houses you can see what you can afford on 50-55k so one can determine beforehand how frugal you must live.

It is always good to have opinions from both sides of the fence. It makes for a more complete decision.
