Getting to know NZ
« on: April 09, 2007, 12:08:06 am »
I think it is overdue that we start to keep up to date and chat about current affairs in NZ, so I have created this new section. Feel free to post articles about current issues in NZ that you feel are important. It will help us all, whether we are already in NZ or not, to understand the good and the bad about everyday issues facing NZ'ers. It will also help us to blend in when we arrive as we will be able to immediately chat to the locals about local issues.

I urgue everybody to listen to NewsTalk ZB everyday as well. It is a 702 type talk station where the issues of the day are dabated, very good for getting yourself up to speed with current news as well as getting used to the accents.

Good Idea Nolan.  I do try and read the NZ herald and Waikato Times daily.

Has anybody found a good 'idiots guide to Kiwi politics' so that we can get up to speed with who's who in NZ politics?

read the papers and you will soon figure out Kiwi politics.

Before I left SA I read www.stuff.co.nz and www.herald.co.nz as well as the local Rotorua newspaper www.dailypost.co.nz every day to keep up to speed.

I have found that on NewsTalkZB that debate *** for days on end, but for me that is a sign that things are working, so small stuff becomes an issue  O0

Too true Nolan. The same issue gets drawn out while they wait for something else newsworthy to happen. ;D
In SA with all its murders, bank robberies, heists and rapes that occur every second it does not even make news.
They had a person robbing a bank 3 times by handing a demand note to the cashier and it became a special feature about the serial bank robber. They feared that he might become dangerous as he purchased a "steak" knife before the last robbery.
Someone told me about a police chase where some youths shot at the police from their car and the police could not do anything but duck as they do not carry guns.....
 ;)
