EISH !!! I don't get to a "thread" for a couple of hours and it's gone haywire on here...  :2funny:
Sorry to say I am not as "qualified" as some of our "learner d" friends on this forum and definitely not in NZ for a long enough time period (only nearly 3 years) to be and "expert" in all things NZ. But I can see that there are some hassles in NZ that JK will have to sort out, quickly. Some are the gangs, crime (those 2 are close related) family violence, alcohol related problems (those 2 are related to the fat guy sitting on his stoep waiting for the "benefits" money to be paid out by the hard working taxpayers just because his ancestors ate their opposition...  ::) ), etc. So Mr Key has got a serious job to do and I just hope he'll be given enough time to "sus" out the situation and then be able to sort it all out, ::) .
About painting a pretty picture of NZ....  ::) , luckily I'm not a "painter" either ...  :2funny: .
Cheers, SAKB.

To answer your question: Yes I do have "issues" with NZ. [...] Suffice to say that there is a general downward trend in the important spheres like education ( NZEA )

Mertz

I'm going to come across as "beter weterig" and apologies in advance but because this website is used by prospective South African immigrants I just want to clarify that the school education system here runs on the NCEA (National Certificate of Educational Achievement) system. Not "NZEA". Just in case someone wants to Google that. Probably just a typo I realise but important perhaps to rectify.

Oof! You have to be really careful about how statements like that come across - especially being South African and all.

I have to state for the record, and because I have personally known quite a of them (that is European New Zealanders) that it is NOT only Maori people who go on to the benefit system. I honestly do know of (and if I know a few then there are quite a few more) white New Zealanders who have never worked a day in their lives, have more than one child - and some with different men/women - and have lived off the benefit system all their adult lives.

I don't want to drag this thread off topic though but I felt I had to say that. Simply because it's the truth.

Now that everyone has ripped the ring out of everyone let me in on the fray,
I have never been one for rose tinted glasses (gives me motion sickness) and as alot of you know by now I am prone to doubts and histeria for no apparent reason, I enjoy reading ALL the posts as oppinions from different types of people in different circumstances with different types of proffesions earning different types of salaries with different amounts of mouths to feed.
I have no doubt there will be times I want to kick my own A for going through this process and times I will want to kiss that same A for doing it (Schizophrenia is such a wonderfull ailment  >:D ) all I can say for certain is I will give it my best and give it all fair go and come visit all of you one family at a time while I explore NZ and get out of it what I can to make a future for my kids ( oh and free food from all the people i visit) Eileen I am coming  :heeha:

Departed - so do I (meaning know some on the opposite side of the fence) but living in a little town like we have for nearly 3 years and seeing the same faces day in and day out then you start "realizing" stuff and it was uttered (tongue in cheek  ::) ) if you know what I mean, but it seems that you didn't. If you knew me you would have realized I'm a "tongue in cheek" kinda guy.

I know I came into this thread late, but I thought I'd answer the question as ours is quite a different story. We actually dismissed NZ as a destination right at the start.

We seriously looked at Canada, and went on an LSD trip there in 2005. We loved the place, but there were certain things that put us off. The difficulty in finding jobs there was the main one - there were way too many PhDs working on assembly lines and driving taxis. So we determined that if we ever did go, there would have to be a good job to go to. Eventually, we just abandoned the idea of emigration from ZA.

At the beginning of 2008, my wife asked if we could revisit the idea of emigration. Our story is similar to many others - crimes, some of them violent, workplace discrimination etc. But the last straw for my wife was the rolling blackouts, which prevented her and her postgrad students from running important research experiments with bacteria (she was a senior lecturer in microbiology at a university). Eventually, she got fed up with not being able to conduct valid research and finally decided to go to the first world where she could apply her skills.

I agreed that we should shift so that she could work properly. The condition was that she get the job, as she would be in demand. As a journalist at the time, I would not be. We listed the possible destinations: Canada, UK, USA, Australia and NZ. I thought NZ was far too small to present any real opportunities for both of us, so wrote that off immediately. The UK we felt did not suit us (even though both our families shifted to ZA from Scotland) and that the UK had serious problems. The USA we did not rule out, but placed at the bottom of the list. That left Canada and Australia. We still had our hearts set on Canada, but those doors just kept closing - no job offers. So my wife contacted various peers around the world and asked them to put their ears to the ground.

To cut a long story short - one of her peers had just left a post to go to a university. He was keen for her to replace him as he knew her work. So the company flew her out for a week and a month later she was offered the job, and here we are!

So it was really where the work was, although as Christians we do believe God's will for us prevailed.

It has worked out fantastically. Our choice was Canada, but I don't think we would have been as happy there as we are here. We are both so in love with this country.  :smitten: Sometimes I just want to hug it.
