Intentional Murder Rates Comparison
« on: January 29, 2010, 12:00:03 PM »
DH just put together some stats that he got from WHO  (World Health Organisation ) that were quite impressive.  We all know that the murder stats in SA are bad, but these are compared to NZ.   These are intentional murders per 100 000 population, in the year 2004.

SA   69 per 100 000  which means 31 050 murders a year

NZ   1.4  per 100 000 which means 56 .

He then went on to figure that your risk of  getting murdered in SA is 50 times more higher than in NZ

That's why I am here. The scary thing is the amount of solved murders.

The great thing is that most if not all of NZ crimes are solved within days. Have any of you recently seen the unsolved cases SA carries?its shocking!!

SA   69 per 100 000  which means 31 050 murders a year

Something does not add up here,

I remember while still being in sa there was an anouncement made by the police that 1,3 million murders where filed away as "undetectable" and will not be investigated further due to lack of evidince and or leads.

At only 31 050 p/a, this will take more than 40 years to accumilate, and that is not counting the solved cases.
Never look down upon someone, unless you are helping him up.

fari - Sorry mate, I have to agree with Nolan. The figures mentioned sounds about like the figures released to the public by the SAPS because if I look at the figures between 2005 and 2007, the time we decided to leave and the time we actually left I was heavily into the figures and these sound a bit like the ones I got hold of aswell. It's not about the figures for me.  As the "stats" show (cooked or not) there is murders all over - one murder per year is too many.

For me it is about the way those murders happen (real hate crimes - mutilation/suffering etc), the way we have come accustomed to witnessing those murders, and the way the police handle those cases ("suspects still at large", corruption).

Just an example - on Sunday morning, a Taxi driver was stabbed to death in Auckland. This is totally random, because how many people ride in taxis.  Understandably they have not caught anyone yet, but I think back in SA this case would be "written off" as a cold case possibly.  Below is an extract from this mornings Herald:

Quote
Additional officers will join the team of 40 to trawl through hours of CCTV footage from the central city where 39-year-old Mr Mohini made his final pick-up, and staff are going door-to-door.

"Every call we receive is important to us, every inquiry we make is a breakthrough," Mr Jones said.

"The community and the nation want to see the person or persons responsible for this frenzied attack held to account for this murder."

Police are looking for a slim man, about 1.75m tall with long, greasy hair in a wavy style swept back from the forehead.

Now don't get me wrong - I have absolute sympathy for the SA police force, but "Extra police handling the case, community and nation wanting to see this case solved, even government looking into how to make Taxi's safer for the drivers"??  You see, after 6 months on little old Godzone, it is the "little" things (like caring) that make me appreciate the fact that I can once again care about other people and not just look out for my own!  You find yourself actually being distressed and your heart goes out to that family of the taxi driver (whom I don't know from a bar of soap).  Six months ago and back in SA, I would just sit there, emotionless, and say "just another statistic".
"Why, sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast."

So true Schalk.
Also in the Herald this morning - "Man Stabbed in Boy Racer Row". Guess what is the last sentence in the small article?? "One man was arrested last night over the incident." The funny thing is the guy also got stabbed last night and a suspect was arrested last night. In SA this wouldn't even have made the papers, never mind a small article on the front page of the NZ Herald. APUM2cW. Cheers, SAKB.
