Maybe things will improve now that Malema is a reservist.  These guys make me sick, they do everything for the publicity and not the real reason.

Hi All,
Been a long time since I was last here. Originally under the name robcraig, but couldn't remember my password, so just reregistered. I was reading a blog on News24 last week about expats etc. Didn't take long to figure out who were residents in SA and who were expats. The aggression in the local's writing was unreal. One of the bloggers actually stated that ther had been 43000 whites murdered in SA, since ANC took over. that equated to over 7 murdered every day for 16 yars - that's a shock. But still , the locals were angry that us expats try and persuade them to leave and tell "such lies" about SA, that are so unfounded (feel a Tui ad coming on here). :uglystupid2:
The irony is that I have been here since August 2007 on a WP (submitted ITA 30 November 2009, so holding thumbs for positive results soon), I have already served one year as a deputy chairman and am in my second year as chairman of the Porirua Chamber of Commerce. I am well known to a number of members of parliament, have a house friend (Samoan) who is the list co ordinator for the Labour Party and head of a major section of CCDHB, have met Bill English and he is a really pleasant man (did think he was the local high school head boy at first - damn he looks young), so have been too busy to worry about convincing anyone to come here. Our NZ) crime rate doesn't even feature in accordance with what is posted, let alone the actual truth. It has been interesting though that the ones who labelled me pessimistic and a traitor, are the very ones asking me how I can help to get them out of SA???? I lived in Joburg for over thirty years. and can't recall meeting anyone, who considered themselves powerful in SA piolitics. Here, the people are so much more laid back. The deputy mayor of Porirua is a Samoan lass that has a sense of humour that is uneqaulled (been unable to return my entry dockets after governance meetings with concil, cause she grabs anyone's she can, and writes 'tosser' on them - had to explain to her what it meant??).
Our ealsest son is getting married in SA in September and neither wife nor I are looking forward to this exercise. My mom visited us for 6 weeks over Christmas and just prior to her return, I overheard her speaking to family in SA saying she was flying back Saturday, thus would be returning to 'prison' that day. When I meantioned the murder figures of 43k to Kiwis, they were horrifed, yet you could see they have no real concept of it. They have never been exposed to those horrors.  :'(

Yesteday I took one of the stray cats around here to the local vet as she was limping badly.  Turned out her pelvis was broken.  She is ok.  Got talking to Tim, the vet, a young Chinese guy who is incredible at his job and his love for these animals.  He mentioned that a friend of his was in Onderstepoort (sp?) with his wife and was advised to spend a bit more money on a flat with security.  He asked me if the walls were really "that high" and I laughed and said yes.  I told him to tell his friend to enjoy himself, but be very careful, not to walk at night etc.  I told him that we don't even go to a beach that has no other people on it.  This was his response, and it is one that I have heard so often and always brings home that people outside SA really do not understand .  He said "Why, in case you get mugged and they steal your wallet ? "  If only that was all.

Schalk mentioned a few posts back about developing some feeling for those that are killed in NZ, namely the taxi driver.  I have been reading the NZ Herald online for close on 4 years now.  When I do read about a killing, a strange feeling comes to me that only a fellow Saffer would understand.  A feeling of "wow, look how much they care, look how much policemanpower they put onto that case, look how everyone cares "

We are very desensitized to brutality in SA.  This is my second reason for leaving SA, crime being the first.  I don't want my girls to have no feeling like me.  I don't shudder when telling of an 18 month old that has been gang raped.  I don't get squeamish when reading of these other atrocities.  I don't get sad.  It just is.  It is a fact of life.  I want to learn to feel again, to shed some tears for people, not just animals.  I want my heart back as Africa has ripped it out and left it to dry in this brutal country of ours. I want my girls to always have their hearts in the right place.

Schalk, your heart is beginning to feel again.  Well done .  :smitten:

You're SPOT on! just the other day I was chatting exactly the same thing to my wife.We so shocked to see the response by police, media etc for a killing or can one call it a "normal killing".Have we been indoctrinated to think some murders are "better" (lack of a better word) than others? or are we just used to gruesome killings?
We have since adopted the NZ life, windows are left open at night, doors unlocked, car parked in front with a sound system in,no alarm and hardly ever locked...My kids roam the area freely without a worry in my eye.Is this because we are expats?Do the people that still live in SA think this is an easy step?especially leaving your comfort of years of building up a life to leave and start from scratch because of the state of our country? I will never sugar coat life in NZ to people who asks, I say it like it is and because they do not comprehend freedom,at the end ....it sounds like it's sugar coated.

Hey fari, I know exactly what you mean. We (wife and I) live in Whitby. From my shower, I can look out over the inlet (Porirua / Pauatahanui lagoon) and through the Mana heads out to sea in the Cook Strait. My wife goes for walks at night, alone around the suburb - awesome paths and walking areas set aside. When it is hot (as it has been recently) we sleep with windows open, as well as the door out onto the upstairs deck, open. Security comprises a chain on the front door. Whitby doesn't allow fences out front, so open all the way. hve left the ranch slider to the back, open a few times. Nearly wet myself when I realised what i had done - just the good old Jozi scares coming back. I think this is the major dilemma I face, about returning to SA in September, to attend our eldest son's wedding. Apart from the costs, I think I have become too much Kiwi and aren't as good at looking over my shoulder anymore. Been trying to convince him that marrying otside of Jozi is really cool, that's coz I too S..t scared to leave the airport in JHB, whatever it's name is now. :knuppel2:
