Another Exodus
« on: March 20, 2010, 09:38:30 PM »
Is it my imagination or does it seem like there is another exodus taking place at the moment?

We were actually discussing that last night and yes we are under the same impression. I think the recession slowed things down a bit, but now it is lifting slowly and the saffers are leaving thick and fast.
Hey who knows maybe one day we will out number the Asians here.  :2funny: :2funny:

I also believe that a lot of people hang on till the new year starts. Even last year in Feb/Mar there was a bigger influx of Saffers.

where do you guys get the stats?

I know you said its "Imagination", "impressions" , "Beliefs".

Is it just that you are meeting more folks that are coming over or know of more family/friends who are moving over.

Sometimes , because you are over,  family and friends who know you went over mention that other folks are going over.  This means you hear the story more  because that is the main topic of conversation.

I would like to know the numbers.  Just to be able to compare it and maybe see what is going on the news during the peaks and dips.

Ronnie I asked the question precisely because I do not have any "stats"!  It is purely a perception from my side and I just wanted to find out if anybody else on this forum is experiencing the same "perception".  My perception is also related to people "expressing interest" and seriously thinking about leaving SA for another country, rather than specifically applying for PR to New Zealand.

My perceptions is also based upon the following:

85 new members on this forum since since February this year.  This does not say a lot, because some of them could be on this side already, but nevertheless that is a lot of new registrations and from what I can see, above the average new registrations.  The amount of people "expressing interest" on this forum is not even a quarter of the amount of people that would look for options elsewhere.  Not everyone joins this forum when they are thinking of immigrating - but an increase on this forum, is usually an indication that immigration in general as an option is on the rise.

Some of my family members back in SA are seriously considering their options elsewhere.  These are the same members of my family that raised their eyebrows when we came over.

It also, from speaking to a lot of people in SA, seems like their is a general mood of despair in SA and most are feeling like everything is going for the dogs.  Once again - no stats, but this is based on perception.

I have the same feeling.......

Suddenly in Feb and March alone, there are a whole lot of new members on
this forum.

When we had Morne's farewell party last Saturday, one of the parents asked
where we are going to, and it turns out they are going to Auckland in April and
I suggested this forum to them as support.

But talking to a lot of people lately and ,yes, all saying they are very
apprehensive of what to expect after the word cup is over and with
motor mouth Malema making all kinds of hate statements and rumours
of genocide doing the rounds, people are scared here. Most mention that they
expect to be without electricity or clean water withing the next two years as well.

This is definitely driving another exodus. But no stats yet, I think this will come though.

I have noticed sadly that the draw results of EOI are way down the last two months though. Anyone else noticed this  .
Last year they drew between 750 and 850 EOI, but since Middle Jan till now only about 500???

This may affect those stats as less people are selected.........

If I may throw in my 2c aswell???
I was thinking the same thing a couple of days ago due to the "newbies" appearing on this forum. Not trying to be ugly to the newbies but it did seem as if there were a few recently that signed up... But you know what?? I also think people like Malema could drive a serious amount of peeps out of the country. Cheers, SAKB.

Jip I have also noticed that! We better get over to NZ soon before other people take all the jobs!  :2funny: :2funny:

But this is very exiting for me as well, you won't believe how many people phone us on a weekly basis and ask where to start............ more and more people want to leave and the funny thing is that the ones that we speak to are not considering OZ, they all want to go to NZ.   O0  Not because it is a bit easier (I don't believe it is so easy anymore) but because of NZ being their 1st choice.  O0

looked it up on the EOI draw results should give a clue. Nolan used to give the results by how many RSA families. There was a big kicker in 2008. I also " guestimated" from the EOI resuts that there would be approx 100 K SAers in NZ.
There were about 50 sa families last draw, well down on the 100's per draw in 2008. Most were onshore, indicating the popularity of the wp route???.
Also looks like NZ has reduced the quota, or NZ as a destination has reduced??? With only 500 odd in the draw vs 800 odd in 2008.

Funny about your guestimation of 100 K SA'ers in NZ. According to the "powers that be" there is only about 40 K Sa'ns in NZ...  :2funny:  :2funny:  :2funny:
I still think you are a whee bit on the "obtimistic" side on the amount of SAffers in NZ.
Cheers, SAKB.

I dont know if they count saffers that are NZ citizens.  According to the books that is an NZ person.
Having had to fill out some goverment forms recently,  they do still track which country you were born in.  Alot of forms ask your nationality but then also asks if you had a previous nationality.

I know alot of saffers who already have citizenship.

Guys - if you follow the news, I'd be surprised if the number of people trying to go is not escalating.  Just the last two days:  Sunday Times exposed a R200m fraudster, and a Free State Family (Man in his 70s, wife and two adult sons (wheelchair bound) attacked with spades and knives with blood everywhere.  The wife fighting for her life in a coma!

Although my siblings have appeared oblivious to our 'Great Adventure' so far, lo and behold, one of my brothers in law, is all of a sudden asking questions, like "Do you really think things won't get better?"  and "Do you think NZ really offers a better quality of life?"

I think every person leaving, must make one or two other people at least think abouth it - do you agree?

Regards,

Lourens

Lourens - Yes, maybe we should make people think but what did you do when you heard somebody is leaving and you haven't thought of it yet??
If you were like me... I thought they were totally bonkers and utterly stupid, because I know that's what I thought, I know I did.
One of my wife's couzins left for NZ in March 2005, and when they did I still asked this guy if he is ok, what is wrong? Nothing he said, all is cool and they are leaving because there is no future in SA for him or his kids. I still thought he was a nutter. About a year after they left my wife comes home one day from work and says she's had it with these idiots for bosses. And then only did we start thinking about it. I then again phoned the couzie in NZ and started asking him questions about NZ. You never know when somebody is going to start "thinking" because untill the "lights" go on in their minds, they don't think about it.
I know we didn't.
Cheers, SAKB.

I always like to use the following example.

1. Put a frog in a pan of room temperature water.
2. Now put the pan on an cold plate on the stove and set the level to 1
3. Slowly the water starts heating up but it happens so slowly that the frog
doesn't notice that it the water's temperature is warmer.
4. Long story short, eventually the water boils and the frog dies.

I call this the boiling frog syndrome where change happens slowly but surely
and eventually and unfortunately for some, the realization comes too late!

I'm glad we are out of there, and I hope for those still there that the world
cup bandwagen lasts....
