Hey today at New World I used the new self service tills.
You scan your shopping, pack you own bags and pay all through a machine - no shop assistant!!
Can you imagine in SA it would be scan 1 item and pack 2 >:D

they've had those machines in the UK for years - they can even pick up when you scan an item and don't put it in the bag, so I'm sure they'd also pick up scanning 1 item and putting 2 in bag... wouldn't work in SA though - glad to hear they're in NZ...

How do NZ shops react to Cash back from tills? You could do this anywhere in the UK, not in SA, but hoping NZ will allow it on debit cards? And petrol on debit cards - allowed?

Last time I had cash on me?......... weeks ago, can't even remember when.  Actually get annoyed when they don't have eftpos and do my shopping elsewhere then.

You can pay for petrol with debit and credit cards. Kiwis love eftpos and other cards.....I have seen someone pay a 20 cent library fine with their eftpos (debit) card. This is becoming a cashless society. I always try keep $20 in my wallet just in case.

yes, you can get cash back with an eftpos payment. I know the supermarket always asks if I want cash back. I think some smaller shops might not.

I am in retail and saw this system in the States a year ago..... it absolutely blew my mind. Amazing, so shop assistants and no chancers.

Yip, you could do the self check-out in the USA too.  Jan used to say that we should get a discount if we're not using staff!   Their is a built-in scale in the system, so that when you don't put an item in the bag that you scanned, it knows, and also knows if you put an item in that is NOT scanned - it weighs more!  They would have to put that in place, as there are thieves even in the more civilized countries!  :-\

Jee love the self scan idea. Must say I think I would be a bit nervous of using it at first though.

Wow I really like the idea of the self-service tills!! I get SO annoyed when I have to wait for a cashier to finish her conversation first and then move at a snails pace to scan my goodies!!!  :tickedoff:

yes, that is called "cash back".

Well, maybe I live under a rock but I havent seen any of those tills yet. Last time I saw one was at Waitrose in London a few years back.

However, I do use the self-service library check out........I felt like a right idiot the 1st time I was confronted with a machine to check the books out.......quick simple once you get the hang of it.
