Hi all
I'm new to this forum - so bear with me.
I've been looking at the various options of entering NZ - and quite frankly - have no idea where to start...(did read here that I can't ask "personal" advise - so won't get site master into trouble)
I've sent my resume to every single job I am qualified to do - and there are plenty - to which the response is "we have to interview"
Now I don't have any work visa/permit - yet to apply for work visa - I have to have an offer of employment.
So I find myself between a rock and a hard place. Pointless sending resume. And after reading this thread - risky just hopping on a plane...
I've sent the one agent an email asking her that if I arrive there and I suitably impress her - would she forward my resume to the potential employer knowing I do not have a work visa yet? to which I am waiting for a reply.

Can anyone advise what the finance industry is like as I see a lot of vacancies within the banking industry - and I have approx 15 years banking experience - banking, credit, mortgage lending & real estate.
Any input would be appreciated.

The chicken - egg catch 22 is terrible, but what can we do, it ain't gonna change any time soon.

The main point of this thread is that if you don't qualify for PR and need a job offer in order to get enough points to qualify, you take a huge risk by packing up your life in SA before coming here to look for work.

Coming over while on leave at your SA employer is a different story, then if things don't work out you can continue as if nothing had happened.

But you have the added "inspiration" when you're here, to "do get" a job otherwise you know what you're going back too....  ::)  .  :gl2:  SAKB.

Thanks for the welcome Nolan  :)

I'm "lucky" in the fact that I can take leave whenever I feel like it and know that the business will continue without me. My staff are truly amazing. And I've played open cards with them. My rock in the office has offered to continue running the business for me while I'm away...for which I will compensate her of course.
As long as I have my laptop and an internet connection - I'm in touch... so yip - I could come on over and do the search thing....

Does anyone know of reasonably-priced LSD trips ( companies, etc.) to NZ?

Thanks

Its called Google. :)
Seriously though, don't bother going through companies to get sucked into a tourist trip that'll cost a fortune. So it yourself, get involved and experience the country for yourself.

You need to book flights (or do this thorugh an agent if you really must), hire a car or a camper - camper is better option as you're free to go where you like. Campervan parks are cheap accommodation. Make a list of places you want to check out. And then do.
Winters a good place to come - you see what the weather's like at its worst and know it'll only get better!

good luck!
Susan

I agree with Susan - campervan must be the best decision we took as the base for our LSD  trip in August last year even though I am not really a caravanner.  We did an LSD trip the year prior in Canada.  By comparison, we saved a bundle, met more local people than we did in Canada, got to see much more of the local flavour of things, found it much more convenient than having to constantly pack/unpack.  Going grocery shopping etc also exposed us to NZ in a way that was simply absent from our Canadian experience.  No doubt about it.  Campervan based LSD can be highly recommended - even at the tail end of winter.

We came over in 2006 July and August on a LSD trip. My wife has a couzin in Tauranga and we used their house as a base station and went somewhere, came back washed, repacked and ducked in another direction, came back and did it allover again. I am in favour of a LSD trip. I know not everybody can afford it but I am a bit of a "banggat". Couldn't pack up and shift half way around the world without "scouting" the place out. But that's just me. We did feel better when we came back in 2007 and things were familiar, which made everything just so much easier. Just my 2c worth again, SAKB.

I would say, ESPECIALLY at the tail end of winter. Our LSD was in August 2008 and the majestic mountains of the South, covered in snow, gave us yet ANOTHER reason (of MANY) to come back quickly! :)

As Lourens said, it gives you a good basis to be doing grocery shopping and an idea of what day-to-day living could be like.

Cheers,
Susan

Going through all the threads again...i'm contemplating making a trip. DH has already been - few years ago...and he loved it... but I think I need to go and see for myself.
Especially if we thinking of going the LBTV route - then going for a couple of weeks to do some market research would be best.  Emailing etc is fair and well - but you'll get more input from people in the industry if you standing infront of them....building relationships while there can only improve one's chances of putting a great business plan together and pave the way to start operating when you land - instead of wasting time - only have 9 months to get it up and running to get the extension of the 27 months...
mmmmmm....

Hehehehe...That's the way to do it! :)

BTW: Another GREAT reason to campervan in winter (August is good) - the prices are WAY lower than in summer time!
We've always hired from these guys www.backpackercampervans.co.nz  - I've found them to have the best prices in winter. There are other places www.jucy.co.nz that might offer deals like free N - S Island ferry tickets (or discounts) etc.
Just Google and search and have fun planning! :0

Cheers,
Susan
