list of things to tick off as you get ready to leave
« on: May 17, 2010, 01:56:04 pm »
Hi, has anyone have a list of the things that must not be forgotten to be done before getting on the plane?
please put it on the forum- I have started jotting down stuff as it occurs to me even in the middle of the night cause I know I won't remember everything so if anyone has such a list I would appreciate seeing it in case I forget something important.

The never-ending list. I'm trying to work through mine now and just when I think I've almost finished, I think of something else.

Some ideas:
cancel TV licence
change postal addresses where needed (policies, banks, etc)
cancel policies if you need to
cancel household contents insurance
cancel medical aid
cancel cellphone contracts
cancel credit cards if need to
get a NZ bank account
sort out all tax documentation
give power of attorney for bank accounts
get all school documents that you would need??
check when your drivers licence expires and make sure it'll be valid for long enough
have a big party
say very sad goodbyes  :(
visit anywhere/anyone that you need to
take photos of things you want to remember - maybe both good and bad??

Damn, I still have a lot of stuff to do. Our container is being packed next Wednesday and it's bad enough having that to stress about.

Please add to the list - I need to know as well.

Good luck.  :gl2:

Here's quite a comprehensive checklist - wish i was at this stage of the game already:

6 months to go

Inform schools that your child will be moving to give them time and help them adjust.

Book your flights to New Zealand.

Review your pension and research opportunity of transferring to NZ.

Talk to a specialist relocation company about assistance in setting up your new life.
Ask several freight companies for quotes for moving personal effects and furniture.

Research schools in New Zealand and read their websites.

Find out what you need to do to ship your pets successfully, or find a new home for them. Go for your medicals and apply for police checks for visas.

Open a New Zealand bank account.

Request credit references from your bank/lending institute.

Find temporary UK accommodation to bridge the gap between selling your house and leaving.

2 months to go

Book temporary accommodation in New Zealand and look at properties for sale.

Setup your NZ Postal address to receive your post. PrivateBox.co.nz provide a perfect service, wherever you move to you can have access to your post.

Give this address to all official contacts including your bank, passport office, DVLA, Inland Revenue and accountants.

Arrange for your post to be redirected to your Private Box address.

1 month to go

Cancel accounts for TV, Internet, phone and insurance.

Bring all your utilities and council tax up-to-date.

Give away or sell any remaining personal effects.

Pay off any outstanding debts.

Transfer funds to your New Zealand bank account.

Confirm bookings with travel agents and freight companies.

Cancel direct debits coming from your account.

Ask for a copy of your no claims bonus form from your insurance agency.

1 week to go

Say goodbye to friends and family, leave some breathing space.

Finalize packing and ensure your possessions are ready to be sent.
Change money into dollars for spending when you first arrive

Purchase little treats for children to keep them entertained on the flight.

1 day to go

Confirm transport to airport.

Double check your hand luggage has everything you need.DONT TAKE ANY SHARP OBJECTS OF LIQUID ON BOARD...

Try to have an early night!

the website has a heck of a lot more info than just the forum, but seems like a lot of people get stuck here and forget to look around  :-\
At the top of the screen, below the boat animation, you will see a row of buttons, one of them is the mymove button, click that and you will find a ton of info there, including the checklists O0

Nog 'n lysie   >:D  - sorry but I have had this for so long that I just have to share it!

1. Change postal address of all accounts to a reliable friend or family member two months before you go (so you can see which companies did not make the change, and you have enough time to sort it out before you go - things like telephone account, DSTV & MNET, City Council, Security company, insurance - both short term and life, Bank (all accounts - some bank’s you have to change it for each account!), Medical Aids, Shopping Cards, Memberships, Doctors, Specialists etc.)
2.  Set up a free email account like gmail and start using it two months before you leave. Then you can see who is still emailing your old email address. Remember when you cancel your ISP you will lose your email address.
3. Start obeying the South African speed limit and road rules. Takes time to get used to watching that speedometer and the cars behind you edging you to go faster.
4. Get a reference letter and client code from your bank.
5. Sign a fax indemnity with your bank. This allows you to give faxed instructions for transactions etc.
6. If you don’t already have internet banking, get it set up and test it.
7. Get a reference letter from your short term insurance detailing your no claim bonus etc.
8. Cancel Telephone account (Do this in writing and keep proof - applies to all cancellations)
9. Cancel cell phone contracts (all three VC, MTN, Cell C contracts require 3 months notice).
10. Cancel ISP
11. Cancel DSTV / MNET
12. Cancel Security Company
13. Cancel SABC license
14. Make the decision whether or not you will continue paying your policies (Life Insurance, Annuities etc) from NZ. Speak to your broker about the effects of early cancellation.
15. Cancel your medical aid (read the fine print - they may require 3 months notice)
16. Close your store accounts.
17. Cancel all membership debit orders etc that won’t continue.
18. Get all you kid’s immunizations up to date and have it recorded on their immunization cards. (To attend day care and school in NZ it has to be up to date).
19. Get a letter of membership and involvement from your church. Advise them that you are leaving.
20. Back-up everything on your computer (photos, documents, inbox, sent items etc) and take the CD’s or removable hard drive with you on the plane.
21. Make certified copies of ALL important documents (passports, visas, ID books, birth certificates etc) and leave it with a reliable friend or family member. Even better yet, have it scanned and leave a copy of the disk - take the other one on the plane with you.
22. Update your will and leave a copy with a reliable friend/family member.
23. Give a reliable person power of attorney to attend to your business on your behalf. Make sure they have details of all your bank accounts, policy numbers, contact persons etc. As well as copies of all important documents. The banks require a special POA and do not accept a general one.
24. Get transfer cards from your kids’ schools and their latest report cards or a progress report.
25. Get reference letters from your kid’s activities e.g. ballet report, etc - this will assist in placing them in the right group when they take it up here. If your child performed in anything, get proof. You WILL need it!
26. Take the whole family for a medical check-up, have their eyes tested, go to the dentist, get that filling etc. Dental and optometry is very expensive.
27. Get the contents of your medical files from all your doctors and specialists. Saves you from going through the whole process again.  If you have a special condition, let the doctor write a letter. If you have contacts or glasses, get your script.
28. Get scripts for all medication your family is currently using - especially chronic. You can bring 3 month’s prescription medication if you have a written script. Take it on the plane with you in case your container is delayed etc. (Also bring some general medication that your family use regularly if it is anything stronger than panado or if it is something specific such as anetheine cream, myprodol, etc).
29. You do not need an international driver’s license but make sure that RSA driver’s is not about to expire. You will require a current RSA license is convert.
30. Leave your flight details, first accommodation details etc with a family member/friend.
31. Also leave the details of your next of kin with this person.
32. Write this person’s contact details in the back of your passport.
33. Service your washing machine and dryer if they haven’t had one in the last 12 months
34. Pay your UIF and de-register. Give your employees their UIF documents as well as a letter that they no longer work for you. (UIF does not only accept the UIF document - they also require a letter that they no longer work for you). Get your domestic worker to sign that they have received their severance package. Keep proof of all of this. Give your employees reference letters and assist them in finding work elsewhere. (Advertise with you school, church, neighbors etc that they will be available from a specific date etc). Pay them their last salary, notice pay, leave and pro rata bonuses. Keep proof.
35. Go to the AA travel shop and buy some SA to NZ plug adapters. Pop them in your hand luggage! Then buy some mulitplugs. The kind with 4 or 5 plugs on a cord. Then when you get there replace the main plug with your NZ plug - you can then use your old SA plugs in the multiplug.
36. If you haven’t yet sold your house, but are planning to do so, get an electricity certificate before you leave. Give it to your agent or the person who will be handling the sale of your property. Keep a copy.
37. Inform your tax consultant that you are leaving. He will still have to complete a tax return for you for the current tax year. Then he may need to deregister you as a tax payer at some point and arrange a tax clearance certificate. In which case you might need to sign papers before you leave.
38. Help the older members of family set up Skype before you leave. Buy them a microphone for their computer as a gift. Install it for them.
39. Take photographs of everyone and everything, your friends, family, the neighbors, your pets, the kid’s friends (give your digital camera to your kids to take to school for a day). Take photographs of your house, neighborhood, church, school, street.... This is all you will have of your life in South Africa. It may not seem important now, but when your kid’s, or grandchildren one day, want to know what life was like, you’ll have more than enough visual memories to share.
40. Have a farewell party at least 3 weeks before you leave. Less tears & emotion than having the goodbye’s at the airport!!
41. Sell your cars.
42. Arrange your transport to the airport.

Ursula

To all leaving soon:

Make sure you have ample proof of every cancellation.  I know that we had to cancel for instance SABC multiple times  ::)
So get and keep reference numbers and try and keep confirmations of cancellations.
