I think you're right about Australia and NZ. My brother has lived and worked in both and he regularly goes to the UK on business. He is a citizen of all three of those countries.

Before we came I asked which was better. I remember what he said. He said it wasn't about which was better, but rather about how they were different. He said, as a one liner, if you want to be steeped in history go to the UK, if you want sunshine and beaches go to Australia, if you want rivers, lakes and mountains, then NZ was for you.

Many folk don't have a choice when they apply (there are also some who do, and will probably make a choice based on something like my brothers one liner). There can be no doubt Australian immigration requirements are stricter (especially when it comes to age) and it takes significantly longer than NZ (the last time I saw any discussion PR type visa's were taking 3 years to process) (WP type visa's will not be issued on-shore in Australia, like they will in NZ)  and Australia is an immigration destination of choice (I read somewhere that only 1 in 7 people applying to immigrate to Australia will be accepted). So a lot of folk just can't get in, and if they are desperate to leave somewhere (like crime in RSA, or for economic reasons like Ireland) then NZ may become the only place they can go to. I think this often makes people try to "justify" their reason for coming to NZ, rather than Australia. Personally after 5 months I don't think there is any reason to "justify", I like rivers, lakes and mountains.

Wonderful post thombatt! I too love the rivers, lakes, ferns, green hills, mountains etc.....sunshine is a massive bonus of course. My husband left a very good steady job in OZ - everyone thought us nuts! Yes, so we do sit here without work and yes, I have faith that something will come along, but for us, it seems so right. Please don't get me wrong - OZ was very good to us - but there was just something lacking. The Aussies are extremely patriotic (Aussie flags flying from cars, houses, windows) although a lot very freindly, they can tend to be a little clicky - nothing wrong with that, sticking with your own kind I suppose, but you sometimes feel a little out of your depth. We had some good Aussie mates, but only because their kids made friends with our kids. I am almost certain if it was not for our children.....we would have not been approached. It is a 'each for his own' remembering we do not have a 'History' in the Countries we choose to immigrate to, so yes, it is hard for the majority of us, unless we have established family members already in that country. It would be nice for our adopted country to welcome and embrace us with open arms...... :P sadly regarding that Aussie bumper sticker I spoke of in my earlier post.....that does not always happen.

I love forests, mountains, rivers and lots of green :D - these are all my happy places!  So that is why I probably love being in NZ.   Yes, it is really tough re-establishing our life all over again in another country, but if we take a drive into the countryside, I find my happiness quickly.

We had been in OZ for just 3 months when we stopped behind a very loud UTE - and on the back window was a bumper sticker which said 'Speak english in OZ or f**k off!!'

There was a similar "bumper" sticker in SA... "Praat Afrikaans of hou jou bek." I've also seen it printed on T-shirts. I can understand where that "idea" comes from. You would want people in your country to become part of you. And not stay different, by choice. That's one of the reasons why I try to "embrace" NZ fully although some of the kiwi's make it a whee bit difficult to wanna "embrace" them, but I try to embrace the "country". This is the new life for my kids. And if I am going to be any kind of an example too my kids then that is where I should start, don't you think? How can I want them to become "kiwi's", if I "refuse" to become one myself??  ::)

Hey SAKB! Yes, but that 'bumper sticker' also made me  as by having that mentality in OZ when half your local shop owners and fruit and veg shop owners are Asian - and most CANNOT speak a word of English - boggled the mind a little.... ;D ag ja.....must just take with a 'pinch of salt'
