Teacher Registration
« on: May 23, 2010, 04:39:14 pm »
Hi All, HELP please

We just got the wife's NZQA assessment back. Her M.Ed was evaluated as Level 9 BUT :) most disappointingly they did not find her qualifications are not able to be assessed as comparable to a current initial teacher education qualification. :(

See initially trained as a Pre Primary teacher, and later did her honours in Foundation Phase.

She has no qualification for 0-2 year old's for ECD registration, And not recognised as a specialist Foundation Phase (Grade R,1,2,3) teacher.

Has anyone else had this problem before and anyone know to get the registration with NZ Teachers Council, even if its a restricted registration.

Please if anyone know how we get past this newest and most frustrating curve ball from NZ bureaucracy.

Regards
Andre

when you say they did not find her quals does that mean they didn't understand what they were, or they had no idea of what it was? did you send in a course breakdown so they knew what she had done? not sure, if nothing works would say to register and do the post grad course here (i know it would be a mission but it would be a way). frustrating re the ECE stuff tho, cos in sa we don't really have an equvilent qual that is ONLY ece, it is part of the rest of them... good luck

Hi Paula

They had the course breakdown. And they understand exactly what it is she did and was qualified for.

They even specifically acknowledge that core part of the NZ requirement are covered by her qualification (Included on the report).

They do not find that her qualifications "comparable to a current initial teacher education qualification."
ie its not a sufficient fit.

Her Pre-Primary Teaching Diploma does not cover the 0,1,2 year olds to match the NZ ECD qualification,

And Her Primary school training is only Foundation Phase, so only year 0,1,2,3 of schooling and is only really covered in her honours and not in her 3 year year Teaching diploma.

Her masters is in special needs on children diagnosed with Aspergers syndrome.

So looking for a Solution.
We will attempt registration (and pay the NS$200  :knuppel2:) for the attempt and see what happens.
But I am not to hopeful at this present.

It may be worth trying for a University Teaching post as a M.Ed grad.

Regards
Andre

Yes, we have our copy of <name>'s NZQA assessment and the comment: "in combination contain core components of a New Zealand Graduate diploma in Teaching (Primary)" means she is welcome to apply for teacher registration using a TCO form as attached.

Go well
