Honestly Chan, dont' worry too much about the weather.  Look at all the stats, if you can find a job in a place with better weather, you will be fine.  Cape Town is having colder and wetter weather than us at the moment !!!

We live in Hamz and I really cannot complain about the weather.  The winters are cold az!!  But it is not that long.  It started getting really cold in winter about two weeks ago and from what I remember last year goes into about mid to end of August before it starts warming up again.  That is only 3 months really.   I find that 3 months to be really cold and miserable but come on it's only 3 months!   For other places in NZ it is colder and the winters last longer.   I used to stay in Durban and loved the warm winters however it rained and rained for days in Durbs anyway - the difference is the rain here is really cold.  I have never been too fussed about the weather either way so I suppose that's why it hasn't been a big deal for me.  I know of people though who can get really depressed in bad weather.  The big difference for me is that the kiwis seem to just carry on with life no matter what the weather is.  So put on your thermals, jacket, gloves and beany and enjoy the country!

We are also from Durban now living in Hamilton...

The weather up here is far better than what we experianced our first year in NZ down in Palmy..! This year we have found the winter much milder and drier - only really had good rain in the last 2 weeks or so. Also not as much frost this year.

I agree Mertz the change from Winter to Summer takes forever and has the most unpredictable weather!! I remember when B was born last year end Sept how freakin cold it was! So much for spring hey!

Back to the book - it is an exceptional book - written by talented writers who can verbalize complex emotions and issues. Neither pro or anti as a whole each story tells its own truth.
I could relate to many of the issues having gone and come back. There are many truths in the book but the one I found most illunimating was raised in the preface and that is the venom with which individuals on either side of the divide attack each other when a contentious or uncomfortable point is raised that does not fit well with them. For me it held therapeutic value.
Lekker lees.

I'll be ordering the book.  The more I know, the more prepared I'll be, that's why I enjoy this forum so much.

Should you leave RSA? Yes, IMO. Will life be heaven forever in NZ? Chances are 50/50 that you will settle well here. Good enough to take then I reckon. But of course nowhere is "heaven forever" and the daily grind of working hard, paying your taxes, your bills, and sorting out personal problems will exist here too.

Whatever you do, remember and accept that NZ is just another country full of problems and that "no crime" is certainly not true about the place. Be aware of the fact that NZ is not an island paradise. Yes, it's safer than RSA and corruption's less but it's remote, expensive, very often cold and wet, has its fair share of crime (rape, child abuse, domestic violence and drugs in particular) and lots of social problems (teenage suicide is very, very high, binge drinking amongst teenagers and youth, high rate of teenage pregnancies, gangs = costly and big problem and bullying - in schools and the work place) and it can be very underdeveloped in many parts.

There are much better places to immigrate to IMO but if NZ's where your skills are acknowledged and if perhaps you already have family in NZ - you should go. Chances are it will always and for the most part do better than 99% of African countries. (Sigh  :-\  ... It's so depressing. Considering the wealth of natural resources that many African countries have it's such a crying shame ...).
