Urgently have to go back to SA
« on: July 17, 2010, 05:58:38 am »
Hi
I have not posted here in what seems like a life time, but it is always reassuring to come back :)
Unfortunately it is under very sad circumstances.  My MIL passed away this morning in SA and I had to book a flight for my husband to go be with his family.  He left a few hours ago.
The problem is his returning residents visa expired last month! I never even gave it a second thought because we sent our passports to Palmerston North In September 2008 to have our 3 month clause removed and thought all our paperwork was in order.  Does anyone have a clue what I do now.  I tried to phone immigration first thing this morning but they are not open on a Saturday!  I have read on here that his permanent residence will expire immediately, is this true? Has anybody else come across this!
Any advise will be appreciated as I feel so alone and stressed about the entire situation.
Thanks

I so feel for you but can't help because I think this will be giving immigration advice. Try to stay calm until Monday and phone immigration directly and get the correct information. What ever the answer is they will be able to assist you best with what to do.

With the state of mind you're in now confusing messages might just make everything look worse. Good luck and if it gets to much PM me so we can chat.

Oh dear Amber
Feel for you... what a horrible thing to have happen.  Our condolences for your families loss.  Reading Mertz's post - i'm sure that due to unforeseen circumstances, he'll be able to get is visa sorted.  He had no choice but to leave in a hurry.
All will be fine...keep the faith.

Maybe it would be good also if he took his mom's death certificate to the consular office.

Our condolences to the family.

Thank you for all your thoughts and replies! I am climbing the walls at the moment, not entirely because of the RRV but because I can't be over there too, it is heartbreaking!  I guess I will have to sit tight for the moment and contact Immigration tomorrow.  I will let you all know the outcome!
x Amber

My condolences to you and your OH. I had to fly back to SA in January 2008 and also had to organize visa's before I left. Can't remember what's the process lately but believe it can be sorted.
Regards, SAKB

Just so you know, hubby got back safely he.  He was allowed to bored in Jo'burg, only to be stopped in Perth!
Anyhow, he was given a 1 month entry permit when he got back and immigration Palmie did our RRV's within 24 hours!
We now have out indeffinate RRVS!
We all miss his mum so much and being so far away makes it harder to get over her passing
One thing I have taken from this is phone as often as you can to speak to your loved ones
Thanks for those that helped me x

Airlines can get quite sulky about this. A lot of countries are making the airlines make sure that people boarding flights have the proper visa for were they're going to.

I heard that if a person doesn't have the proper visa then the airline has to carry them back at the airline's cost, not the government's cost.
