scanning your own purchases
« on: October 04, 2010, 08:03:34 am »
I remember when I was in NZ 2 years ago on a visit and I went grocery shopping with my DIL. As we went in she picked up a hand scanner at the entrance,  and then scanned all the items she put in her basket herself.  Apparently certain customers can request to do this.  Do they still do that???  When she came to the checkout they merely  looked at the amount on the scanner, she paid, and that was that. :o :o They do have random checks now and then.  I was thinking what it would be like to have that system here in SA :2funny: :2funny: :2funny:  The mind boggles    :2funny:

yeah, also the pack and save allows you to take your own scanner along while you shop, you just hand it in and tell them which items didnt scan.

I have heard of the hand held scanners too.  Haven't looked for one yet, must try that.  Our New World and Pack & Sav have self checkout tills too.  Haven't seen them in the Warehouse down our way yet.

You sometimes see a woman who would have made a Joan of Arc in another century and climate, threshing herself to pieces over all the mean worry of housekeeping. - Rudyard Kipling

Good one !!   Yip, i like a clean and tidy house, but will not kill myself to get it so.  That will be the last thought that I have on my deathbed "wish I had kept a cleaner house " .....

Regarding self service scanning.  The first time I did it , I made such a mess of it that I had to ask help  :2funny:  Yip, really blonde moment there.

On Sunday, the girls pleaded with daddy to buy them a ball each as it only cost 99c.  So he told them to go to the self scanners, and found they were $9.99.  So he told them to put the balls back, and as we were waiting, I noticed there was a sign on the screen blinking "Do you want to cancel this transaction or continue.  So I pressed cancel, and we left.  As we were packing our stuff into the car, one of the managers came running out to our car, with a slip , and asked us if we had the balls.  Apparently, we were meant to call one of them to cancel the transaction.  She was double checking to make sure we had not taken the balls, and we were reprimanded  :2funny:   Won't do that again.

The honesty here is great  O0

Yip, had the self-checkout stuff in the USA too.  Only thing is... seeing as they're not having to pay somebody to sit there, shouldn't I be getting a discount because I'm using it?  So therefore, seeing as I DON'T get a discount, I use the Tannie with the blue hair and nose ring, because she's being paid to do it for me.

They still have to pay a Tannie to "oversee" the self-checkouts - especially for me who sometimes screws it up...   ;)  so no discount!  :'(
:2funny:   I also screw it up so badly, and look like a complete idiot, that I shy away from it.  When I did manage to get it right once, I was so chuffed people thought I had won the lotto.

Problem is that most of the time the scanners don't work. We gave up on third attempt, as it was just too frustrating.

In Palmerston North Pak'nSave they had all the prices on digital display... no more handwritten or printed-out prices on the racks that don't correspond, or are outdated.  Digital right there - if they need to change the price, they do it on the computer upstairs, and the display is updated at the product, automatically!  How COOL is that!
Now what would REALLY be WAY cool, is if they had scanners built-in to the trolleys.  You just scan as you put the stuff in, and when you get to the checkout, it's a wireless chat with the terminal... I think I'm thinking ahead of myself...  :2funny:
