This appeared in todays Star newspaper, amazing how quickly they jumped on this story but completely ignore anything else that happens in NZ. The SA press just thrive on stories about racism, no wonder this country cannot move forward. :(

NZ TV man is suspended after on-air racist remarks  October 05, 2010 Edition 3

WELLINGTON: A New Zealand TV presenter has been suspended after sparking a race row by questioning whether the country's ethnic minority governor general was a proper New Zealander.
State-owned broadcaster TVNZ said breakfast host Paul Henry had "crossed the line" in remarks yesterday that challenged the credentials of Governor General Anand Satyanand, who was born in Auckland to Indo-Fijian parents.
"Is he even a New Zealander?" Henry asked Prime Minister John Key, who must choose a replacement for Satyanand when his term as Queen Elizabeth's representative in New Zealand ends next year.
"Are you going to choose a New Zealander who looks and sounds like a New Zealander this time? Are we going to go for someone who is more like a New Zealander?"
TVNZ initially fuelled the row by defending the broadcaster for saying "the things we quietly think but are scared to say out loud". However, after receiving dozens of complaints, TVNZ chief executive Rick Ellis said today Henry's comments were inappropriate and he would be suspended without pay until October 18.
Henry apologised on air before his suspension was announced, saying: "I certainly didn't intend to sound racist." - Sapa-AFP

Firstly - what does a New Zealander look or sound like? Maybe there is a list of pre-requisites that none of us are aware of.
The Governor General was born in New Zealand, what more do they want?

Further, what does this mean for any of us Saffers living or wanting to live in NZ? Will we ever be considered New Zealanders?

I cannot believe that racism/discrimination at this level is still going to be with us in NZ! I thought  I was escaping those ignorant fools by leaving SA!

Well, it's just like here.  I was born in Africa, but I'm not considered African.  My country of birth doesn't want me.  My ancestors were from the UK, but I'm not allowed there either.  Oh well ...........

I get told that i talk nonsense when I say i have seen more racism here, than where I worked and lived.  ..... I took out my rest of the line .....

Cleo23,  you asked if we will be considered New Zealandars....  apparently there are levels... Irene van Dyk who carried the flag at the commonwealth games,  who has been a citizen since 2005 and been playing for NZ way before then,   was "not kiwi enough" according to many.   Considering i would not be such a big asset to NZ ,  the likelihood that 30 years of citizenship would change my kiwi status is unlikely.   Accept and move on.

Paul Henry is a shock journalist. I like him.

I think if you get a NZ passport, integrate, and have been here some time people will consider you a Kiwi. Support the Boks and the Bulls and you will never ever be a Kiwi. Its up to you!  >:D

I must say, I love Paul Henry as well. Interestingly though, on Monday morning I think it was, they were reading out a letter from a viewer that was complaining about Irene van Dyk being the flag-bearer for the games, saying she wasn't a "born-and-bred" Kiwi and Paul and Pippa both said that she was a Kiwi, that she's more of a Kiwi in fact than someone who just happened to be born here because she chose to be here in NZ and make it her home.

That's why I love him. I've had enough of all this PC nonsense in SA and being too scared to say anything.

Will have to make a point of listening to this guy when we arrive.  Sounds like my kind of guy.  Us Saffers should be pretty thick skinned by now when it comes to PC anyway and should be able to find the humour in these things.

I believe that the poll results were 35% thought she wasn't Kiwi enough? That's lots but still a majority that believe she was. :)

Its amazing isn't it that Irene is good enough to help them win netball games but not good enough to carry the flag?  I have met some really rascist Kiwis - they just keep their rascist remarks under wraps because there is so much inter marriage that they could cause offence.  They wait until they know who is in the room before they speak but they DO speak badly of other races.  They are not as PC as they make out.
Life is too short for regrets.

When we had our one on one with an agent from Protea Pacific we were told by the agent that the Kiwis are racist.  So I'm really not that surprised by what's going on.
