You need to apply for an IRD number as soon as you can after arriving, and before you start working.
It's an Inland Revenue number and you need one for everybody in the family, even kids!
The form number is IR 595

Thanx
It's on our list now! Should we do this even before we apply for a WP?

Here they call it a "TIN"  Tax Identification Number... only for those like me, who aren't allowed to have a SSN (Social Security Number)  Nothing really secure about that though..  :idiot2:

Thanks Linda

What does everybody have on their list of things to do when you arrive - then we can make a checklist out of it that we can all use.

Once I am over there I'll get all the info and then set it up on site.

Hi guys
Feels very weird to be posting from this side of the pond!  ;)

I asked my boss about it and he said that getting an IRD number only takes a couple of days and that I could do it once I started working.  I am not going to stress about it now because they always want your details for everything and I don't have permanent contact details yet.  We do have a mobile number but no address or landline.

What I'd also add to the list is the bank account.  We used my ABSA cards for the first couple of days and a $20 withdrawal cost between R260 and R350 - quite an expensive exercise to draw cash and you can't always pay with a credit card.

Also, if you have PR sorted out before you come that helps a lot - it seems that you struggle to get a home loan without it.
