Hi - are high school fees 'free' or is there a levy that you pay?

Most have fees which are not compulsory, but we are happy to pay - a whole $156 for the entire year  :)  Some subjects incur extra costs like art etc.  My son does technology and that is $80 which is for all his equipment.  And he had to pay $20 for his science work book.  His other stationery and books (not text books which you don't buy here like in SA) came to $28. And that was it.  His uniform came to $220 which was for 2 pairs pants, 3 shirts, 4 pairs socks.  Must still buy a jersey for winter.  Considering that his blazer alone cost R800 in SA, this was cheap as chips I think.  Oh yes, just a tip - bring your son's scientific / maths calculator - the one here costs $93  :o

For intermediate schools (10-13 year olds) you pay 220 NZD per year, and we had no further costs.

For College (14-18 years olds) you also pay 220 NZD per year, depending on their subjects. We paid $310 (total) last year and $340 (total) this year for a 15 year old with mostly IT subjects.

This sounds great, though my kids are still small. Cant wait to get there and hopefully get a job and then I will know that my kids will have a chance at a great future.

Yip, we were paying R21 000 per year excluding uniform, stationery, text books, sport tours etc.  And were planning on sending DD to private school in 2 years time , but had no idea how we were going to afford it  :o
