Invecagill anyone??
« on: April 12, 2011, 10:11:50 AM »
Anyone living in Invecagill?  Or visited there?
I know it is on the SOUTH SOUTH of the SI - and the weather can be dreadfully cold in winter (apparantly not colder than say Cananda?)
I was browsing the net last night & came across a coaching job that would be PERFECT for DH... closing date is 15th - so found it in time I'd think..  ;)
The only thing being it is in Invecagill (or like my friend in chch said - In - ve - giggle)
Any info would be appreciated.  We didn't go that far south when I did LSD last year...though dear friend said it would be great to see - very scenic down south...

We'll see what happens with the job application - it states at the bottom... "eligilbe to work in NZ" and the usual stuff. Suppose the only thing to do is wait and see.  If it is meant to be - it will be... whatever His will is  :)

:gl2: and all the best with your DH job application,  plans and decisions! Yes, I too live by that....if it's meant to be...so be it. ;)

Feather lived in Invercargill for quite some time.  I'm sure she can enlighten you of what its like to live there.

All I know of Invergiggle is that they have a really "cool" mayor (or shall we "Mêr") and the only time I notice them is either watching the weather on the news at night (and it seems to have a permanent cloud over it) or when the Highlanders are playing (again, it seems cold there).

Around the office my fellow Kiwi colleagues does not have a lot of good to say about it - something in the line of "Deep South" or "Deliverance Country".  Seems a bit isolated way down south with a limited gene-pool...  :-\

Then again, my fellow Kiwi colleagues are jealous of everything non-Wellington  ;)

I think Feather actually lived just outside in a town called Mosgiel, which I think was part of Invercargill district.  As far as I can remember they weren't too unhappy there.  She will probably reply soon with her own honest opinion about the place:  O0

I would go for it if your DH gets the job, at least you have your foot in the door.  You don't have to live down there forever if you don't like it.

I read lots of bad things about NZ weather before we came can but I can say Auckland is really hot in Summer, almost too host with its humidity.  I've heard the humidity is better in Wellies.

Remember to take your crampons along on training rides and also not to freeze out the r's out of Invercargill.

We spent a week there in mid April last year.  It wasn't that bad, just bitterly cold and windy at the very end where it is the closest to the South Pole.    Very pretty.  We were in Riverton, which is about 20 minutes from Invercargill.  We have family there.  If you pm me your email address, then I can ask them if they don't mind you asking them questions.  They have been there for 2 years, have a 16 and 17 year old who are very happy there.   They often go to Queenstown for a weekend splash.

:2funny: :2funny: :2funny: oh my word - you had me in stitches...I now see my e..o.  :2funny: no R in site... hahahahahah

I know i'm jumping the gun with my request for info... all depends on the job... When I read the job description I got this tingling feeling - WOW - how this fully describes what he currently does...and then I saw InveRcaRgill - & my heart sank.

But hey - if one has to suffer cold & clouds for a while - then so be it... the new velodrome town will be announced soon I believe & one can always request a transfer...& if all else fails just look for something else.
Don't count your chickens before they hatch - so I'll just have to be patient for a wee bit longer & see what happens.
Busy putting DH resume together to hone in on their requirements.  Wish us luck!  :D

Thanks Savayla for your kindness - I'll bug IF he's in with a chance  O0

I haven't lived in Invercargill.  I lived in Mosgiel, 15 minutes west of Dunedin, +-5 hours drive away from Invercargill, part of the Otago Province.  I did visit there in Autumn.  It is a lovely area.  It is colder.  The Autumn evenings are cold enough to warrant using a winter coat outside.  During the day it was really warm, unless you were at Bluff, which is closest to Steward Island, and like most of the SI it is windy.  The SI falls into the Roaring Forties, so there is little chance of no wind, there is always wind, the strength differs from day to day.
I think it would be a good way into the country, you can always move around when you find something in a different area.

Good luck with the application!!

Praying!!  By now you've replied to their email.  Note though, that it's Easter weekend, which here means that everybody is off till Tuesday, and then they first need to recouperate after the weekend, so I only expect them to start looking at it around Wednesday!

so for now, just relax and enjoy the weekend.  You can't change a thing by worrying!!

I have a friend who is a teacher there - he went from the Namibian desert to the cold pole!  He loves it, he said it took a while to get used to the weather and learn how to dress for it, but he says he won't move....his pictures he posts on FB are stunning.

I've been to Invercargill for work and I really like it.

It's cold, but I think it's a nice town.  It's rugged, and the weather can be wild.  I really like that.  It's not overcrowded and busy.

I could live there.
