« on: April 13, 2011, 01:08:46 AM »
Hi everyone, I really have no idea what to say but these people here on this site are so great ;) that I kinda had to post something! I am basically trying to find out about SA, what is happening, why people are moving and things about the immigration process and if possible, advice for people trying to get visas, not for myself but for my friends...

Welcome to the forum knolbl!  I hope you find all the information you need on this site.  Dig in and dig around and I am sure you will find it!

I am a bit confused about your statement however...  Are you not from or not currently living in South Africa?  I ask because of this...:
I am basically trying to find out about SA, what is happening, why people are moving

I think all of us can go on with what is happening in South Africa, and it probably boils down to different things irritate different folks, but have a look at some online newspapers from SA if you really want to know...

As for why we left, well to be honest, after living here for two years, one gets to a point where you just get a bit tired of trying to justify everything and you sort of stay away from debates involving "Should I stay or Should I go".  Once again it boils down to personal preference and everyone has a story -- I just know that, although we miss the family terribly, we are definitely not missing anything else back in SA and are more convinced than ever that we made the right choice.  But as I said - it boils down to personal preference.

My advice for your "friends" would be to start reading (a lot!!) and do your research proper.  The immigration website for NZ is a great place to start as to what sort of visas one can apply for.

Hope you and your friends get all the info you need!!  ;)

I have a feeling from Knobl's second post that he might be from the Netherlands and is in fact Dutch...

You really are a cheerful bunch. I suppose I was afraid that you'd kick me out cos I'm not Afrikaans or something. Hope not...
Rockhopper knows what he is talking about. (mostly)
I have to say firstly that you may have to change that he to a she  >:( ...... haha don't worry bout it ;D
Yes, I am Dutch and from the Netherlands. I have lived in NZ for the past 11 years as a permanent resident with my direct family. (note to all, I am 18). I understand just a bit what it is like to move though I was quite young when we did so. I also slightly understand the implications of it and maybe that is why I get on so well with people like my friends who are, so to speak, from a different world.
I am sorry if you think I am trying to pry or so, will talk to my friend and see if they are keen to come in here. No idea if they will or are...
As to your confusion over that statement that some of you have brought up, I am basically saying that I want to learn, know and understand. I want to know what is going on in the world but particularly SA. I can't really think of a better way to say it.
That might have put a bit of an end to your speculation but thank you so much for your advice. I must say that though you describe yourself as :nosey: you are really very :). I have started to follow your advice and do a bit of :coffee: and will do so more as I find spare time.

Very welcome once again!  We gladly accept non-Afrikaans speaking ladies and we will definitely not kick you out because of that  ;)

As far as learning about South Africa -- unfortunately you are not going to get much from me, as I am mostly trying to forget everything that was wrong in that country.

Welcome, but I can't say I will give you great advice about SA...we are trying to get into NZ.  SA has great weather and beauty, not much else.

good thing you are nice to the ladies  ;) I can however speak Afrikaans. Well, maybe I butcher it a little when speaking but I can at least read and write it. Though yes is writing it gets just a teentsy bit butchered too. Not so bad in the writing though.
:( Really that bad? I thought it hit me a while back how bad it was there but I seem to get hit over and over.  :1hug: to all you out there having to deal with this. No worries if you do not wish to go back over this. There is lots more for me to find out there so do not feel bad.
Not likely tha you will  find such great weather here in NZ Chan but that might just depend where you settle and I am sure that that is probably the least of your worries. Aside from that, NZ is a beautiful country and I wish you the best that I can possibly wish.

Hi knolbl. There is a lot to see in South Africa, and it is a very beautiful country. The experience one has as a tourist is different from living in the country as a citizen, which is true anywhere. Some areas see more crime and poverty than others, and it's hard to paint the entire country with one brush.

Cape Town is breathtaking, and if you take reasonable precautions to stay safe, it can still be a great holiday spot, imo. My family has spent a lot of time touring the country, and we'd be happy to recommend some great holiday spots and attractions in the Cape. The animals are AMAZING, and the national parks and landscapes you'll find in SA are among the most beautiful on Earth. There are lots of great people, and most people are very obliging if you express interest in their culture.

Keep in mind that the crime is very high along with poverty across the country, unfortunately, and you do need to be more aware of your surroundings. Understand, too, that people who have been victims of violent crime are not likely to give the country glowing reviews, and that can be why you'll find varying opinions on the state of the nation. With politics and economic policies...there is polarization regarding the best way forward and the direction that the country is taking, and you'll find both pessimism and optimism on the topic.

There is a lot of revisionist history floating around when it comes to SA, which is unfortunate. You will find people from outside the country who have strong opinions on topics without really understanding the country or its history. If you would like to better understand the country as a whole, it's a good idea to speak with lots of different people, and with lots of different backgrounds and cultural groups. Also, refer to primary sources of information when you can (original newspaper articles, court documents, historical reports, photos, etc). It can be eye opening.
