Thumbs up for Starship Hosp...
« on: May 18, 2011, 10:24:56 pm »
Last weekend, SA friends of ours had a horrific experience with their 22 month old son. This little boy had a high temp last Sunday night, which caused him to have a full blown seizure....which they could not stop, paramedicts rushed him through to Tauranga Hosp. :'(  From there, he was airlifted to Starship Childrens Hospital, Auckland and put on life support...poor, poor parents had to do the mercy dash at 2am from Tauranga to Auckland by car..... :'( not even bothering to pack clothes. THANK THE LORD, this little mite is okay, but, my friend cannot praise Starship enough! From feeding them, to clothing them.....now this is excellent service  O0 He was discharged late last Thursday, ambulance brought him home to his door (with mommy).......and nurses still call the house to find out how he is doing.... :smitten: Good on you Starship!! This is when medical/nursing staff adore what they do.......God bless them all!

So happy to hear he is OK and great happy ending   Very different from our experience with our DD last year and a private hospital in EL which shall remain nameless  :tickedoff:  I've heard really good things about the Starship hospital  O0

Sorry you had a bad experience - when it's regarding a child, one expects brilliant treatment - this story really warmed me, as I too have had some shocking experiences in the past.....there is... 'doing your job' and 'loving what you do' they had the pleasure of the latter...... O0  and having to go through this hectic experience in a new Country - only makes you love it more!

I am so pleased to hear this Rockhopper  :)  Especially about the taking blood part.  I couldn't believe that there wasn't even a play room in the children's ward where DD was in EL and getting a drip into her was traumatic enough without them having to change it and redo it up to 3 times a day because they were so incompetent that it would block and get air bubbles etc etc.  Worst thing we've ever been through.  After 2 days, DD would just scream whenever a nurse came near her or even entered the room.  And we were there for a whole week  :( When her specialist heard we were leaving for NZ within a month, he said "bet you can't wait after this experience".  God only knows what goes on in the state hospitals in SA  >:(

Oh, boy Rockhopper, I so share your concerns regarding hospital care of our family back in SA. My Dad went to Groote Schuur for an appointment.... :heeha: he said shocking to say the least. So worried for my folks should they need medical care. As they cannot afford private.

Great news regarding Tygerberg hospital O0 I too have heard they are jacked up! Lets hope it stays that way!

Crime and health services are some of the main reasons we are also leaving EL (SA) for Wellington NZ at the end of May 2011.
We also went to Palmerston North Hospital last year March and as a state hospital it is equivalent if not better than our private hospitals in EL, SA
