almost_heaven had similar issues, so have a look at her posts and perhaps PM her.

It's all about playing it forward.

As long as you have written permission, but check with INZ exactly what format etc the letter should take and what details they want included.  I had the same situation - one child from a previous relationship.  The letter I drew up and which his father signed was accepted by INZ, but we were never married. PM me your email and I'll scan it to you. My son turned 16 during the process, so that could have simplified things for INZ, so also check with almost_heaven what they required from her.

My 2c worth- keep your money and just fill in the forms they send you and supply the information they want when they want it. It is that simple. Promise.
You are really going to be grateful to have that money when you buy a car (you will have to pay cash if you don't have a job) or have to pay a rental deposit.

I see that all the newbies are trolling the site and giving their 2c worth.....

My turn:  I agree, do it yourself.  You don't have to be a rocket scientist to complete and submit the on-line EOI.  You would have to get all of the info together anyway to give the agent.  Don't do any of this, however, if you are not yet in possession of unabridged birth & marriage certificates.... the delays caused by Home Affairs will test your resolve to the extent that you will either give up on the whole idea or strengthen your resolve to leave this [ (your choice of adjectives/nouns) ] country.  I am not sure whether an agent would be able to achieve better than what you could with the advice and support given by the experienced emigres on these forums.  My sister used an agent 7 years ago and they LOST the ITA and the medical report/xrays.  This delayed their whole application by 6 months.
