Within 3 days I received 6 responses using http://www.intlmovers.com/.
First company, Byrants came yesterday and the rest are following this week. Others that responded were, Crown, Biddulphs, Execu, Jack Wallstead, Pickfords.  Read that Magna Thomson is also worth contacting.
My first quote for a full individual(not sharing) 20ft container that will take almost everything in my 3 bedroom house is R38 000 excl insurance. Will see what the rest come up with. Still cheaper than replacing all of my belongings. It seems that 30 to 40 will be the range, but we will see it unfold......

Mmm, see our car is paid up. So I thought that it would be 1 less thing to buy that side. But if we did plan on taking the car, would the car, dining room suite, 2 beds and bout 20 boxes fit in a 20 ft container?

Yesterday we received a quote from Elliots for R21 899 for half a 20ft container, so we'll probably go with them, cheapest quote so far, door to door Hilton to Wellington.

That doesn't sound too bad Chan.. if you don't mind me asking - what items fit in 1/2 a container...? Furniture items?

Cyclewife – packers have told us that when packing ‘wisely’, you can get a whole lot more packed.  They are packing for us – they pack INTO things, like the washing machine etc.  We are taking basic stuff to get us started, so the beds, washing machine, microwave, fridge/freezer, one large couch, tools, our paintings, linen, kitchen stuff  and personal items.  16 cubic meters is actually quite a bit of space.

Great stuff Chan - thanks for that.
We'll probably have the same.  also taking bear necessities.  Prefer that they pack - they sign off on the goods packed & know what will cause a prob or not.

Hi guys,

Did anyone here check the terms and conditions from the removal companies?  I was shocked to read that the moving company I was going to use is:  1.  basically responsible for nothing (so if they break something...tough),  2.  They can change the quote as they wish without your prior knowledge, etc and etc and more.  I will be shopping around.

Geez.. just shows - always read the fine print...

Has anyone here used U-Bag for unaccompanied luggage?  Friend has moved to Malta & sent her bicycle & few things with them as unaccompanied luggage.  She seems to be over the moon with their service.
Just thinking ahead for when we EVENTUALLY  :flight: - good idea for our bicycles & a few personal belongings.
Will have to check & see what it would cost - food for thought

Oh and please do remember that the price you are quoted on is connected to the rand/dollar so the price you pay is not the actual price but the price you pay the day day load connected to the dollar....we were quoted +-R43000 for a 20 foot container and ended up paying about R48500 +-

What Hennie is saying is spot on. It does not help if the rand weakens as it did in the last couple of months. Our final price with insurance for a 20ft container ended at R47000 :P , but I paid with a smile knowing that all our personal belongings will be with us when we move into a home next year. Cosidering the guy who bought my home in Pta is moving from Empangeni and it is costing him R35000 the price suddenly does not look that unrealistic.
Our container was loaded and locked yesterday and we will be following 17 Jan 2012. Countdown time! Let me tell you the company I used was excellent and I actually could not believe they managed to get everything in the container :uglystupid2: . I was standing around trying to decide what to leave behind, but after some deliberation amongst them they managed to get the last items in. :yippee:

;) hope you are settling nicely!

We are still contemplating whether to send a few pieces of furniture...was it REALLY worth the money? The Christmas opening of the container etc? Or do you think the thrill of buying new stuff might be exciting?

So many decisions  8)

We made our decision by looking at what we had that was fairly new and expensive - like our Sealy beds and brand new LG fridge etc.  Then we looked online at the replacement cost here as well as taking into account the shipping.  In the end it worked out cheaper to go with a shared container in order to bring mainly our beds, bedroom suite, fridge, gaming computers and boxes of linen, clothes and other sentimental items.  We didn't bring any whiteware or kitchen stuff other than our microwave which is an expensive one and was only a year old.  I had no pots of value etc.  We sent everything to auction that we didn't pack - and I mean everything.  We made a tidy sum from that which almost paid for our shared container  :)  It wasn't worth paying an extra $25k plus to get our own container.  From experience, I can tell you that things that are expensive to replace here are beds, washing machine, fridge.  If you have an expensive kettle and toaster, pack that too. TVs and furniture is cheap.  We replaced all furniture brand new by buying on the big sales.  Lounge suites can be marked down by $2000 at a time eg. $2999 marked down to $1299 etc.  These sales are on all the time at places like Harvey Norman, Big Save etc.  It was wonderful having everything new and fresh  :)  Briscoes often have 60% off sales on small appliances and whiteware.  Good quality clothing and underwear is expensive here and not as nice as Woolies stuff.  Spend a bit on new clothes before you come.
