SA brown bread.....
« on: October 11, 2011, 01:20:42 AM »
Does anyone remember a certain brown bread we got back in SA. It was DARK brown, a dumpy loaf, not sliced and had a sticker on the actual bread, crust side?

None of my SA friends seem to remember this, unless I'm going :idiot2:......I loved that bread, and cannot for the life of me find a really decent brown bread here. Plenty of wholegrain etc......but I am longing for a proper dark loaf of bread.

You're not perhaps thinking of Uncle Salies Wholemeal bread?  Other than that, it might have been a local bakery supplying it...

Have you tried Ploughmans Bakery's Country Grain?  I think it is expensive, but purely on looks it does look the best  :-\

We bought a breadmaker on Trademe for $17 when we landed here and have not looked back.  We set the timer to start baking so that it is done by 6am.  Quality bread when you wake up in the morning!  Nothing like the smell of homemade bread to wake you up...

Although we loved Uncle Salies, it was not that - I can see that load of bread to this day. You could put your whole hand over it when cutting it, it was so such a small loaf.......

I will give the Ploughmans Country grain a try, as long as it is dark brown. SA still has a good few products which the rest of the world cannot touch ;) Along with the good old Pick n' Pay donuts with the apricot jam in the middle and dusted with flour :licklips: sorry, going off topic again ;D but yum!!

Aaah I think I know which one you might be talking about - was it some or other seedloaf??  A smallish, but very plump bread that filled you up big time!  I might be wrong though - so many things I am starting to forget about that long lost country.

One thing that my wife was really addicted to in SA was the hotdog sized Chocolate Eclairs with the loads of cream in the middle.  Somehow you just don't get them here.  You get other stuff with cream in it and empty boring and small Eclairs, but not those kinds.

I also missed the Kaapse Koeksisters - the hotdog sized doughnuts with coconut around it - until my wife made a batch and I sort of overdosed....  ;

I think you might be talking about a "Blueribbon" bread...  ???

If not then I'm out of the water and lost as well.

Oh yum! yes, I remember those giant Eclairs, just too die for. Yes, I think you remember that  bread, very small, but dumpy, fat and hell, filling......will check out all the brown breads tomorrow, as am really 'lus' for a proper brown bread sarmie - cannot handle this  wholegrain stuff. That's cardboard :D The darker the bread, the healthier......

Nothing will shock me, with regards to the prices there now :-\  If you must pay R60 for a box of frozen hake fillets, hey? Very daunting.

So glad people in NZ check up on SA prices from time to time.  'Friends' (who have never lived in NZ) tell me the cost of living is over the top in NZ.  SA food prices are what is over the top.  If the cost of living in NZ is high, I am more that FULLY prepared for it.

Tui, when you say "brown" bread do you mean brown or something like a Rye flour bread?  Those tend to be very dense and delicious.

Try the Freya's or Ploughman's Dark rye - delicious and nutty.

Cheers

Hey Susan, yes, I am looking for dark brown bread, firm, solid and heavy. Some  rye breads are so flimsy :-\  But the dark rye you mentioned sounds delish O0 I will eventually get to the name of that SA bread I am trying to remember....it will come to me :D

Not that this post is helpful....I remember the bread, but don't remember the name!
Brown, dumpy loaf with a sticker on the crust......hmmmm....seems so long ago.
My life in SA is a bit fuzzy now, can hardly remember stuff.

Albany bread is bigger than ever in SA now, the most expensive.  Although nice when it's fresh, when it has mould on it, it is still soft, which makes me think it is full of preservatives or something!

Most commercially produced bread is PUMPED full of preservatives, stabilizers etc etc to make it stay fresher for longer.  Read this for a bit of eye opening on commercial bread making - this process is used throughout the world:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chorleywood_bread_process

Its pretty scary about how many bizarre processes are used in commercial food manufacturing these days that the consumer is oblivious about.

Ah....after months of looking for a decent brown bread (to my liking) I found it!!

And I did try one or two of the fancy smancy brown breads, some @ $6.99 a loaf...... :heeha: This loaf of bread is priced
at $2.99, so not bad, and it is so yummy. It's Signature Range, Highland Wholemeal. Just fantastic for those summer
cold meat and salad sarmies.
