Hello to everyone
« on: January 26, 2012, 01:59:24 PM »
First of all this is a great forum and very informative!

I have spent alot of time reading, but the time has come to introduce my little family.

We are in the process of relocating to NZ or OZ, yes I know that sounds so confused . Our first option had always been NZ but in the last year or so we have decided to go to OZ. We've always had this great feeling about NZ but were always worried about the weather that it might be too cold for us. My little boy (2y8m) is suffering from asthma and I think that was probably the main reason why we chose OZ instead (hot az hell). In the meantime something has changed our minds again!!

My husband who is in the IT industry (Software developer) was contacted by a NZ recruitment company a week ago via Linkedin. They are really interested to do a telephonic interview next week monday. He never got any feedback from recruiters/companies in OZ. He even had a interview from recruiters in the Netherlands.
I just have a gut feeling NZ is the way to go...
Does anyone know the average salary in IT, cause we really want to make the move worth it, if he happens to get the job?

I am in the medical field -  I am working in a medical laboratory - yes all those medicals that you have to do before immigrating - I am doing the testing of those samples. What are jobs like in NZ for me? It would be great if anyone can assist? I would love to hear from you soon.

Kind reagrds

http://www.seek.co.nz/JobSearch?DateRange=31&SearchFrom=quickupper&Refinement=WorkType&SearchType=Refinement&Keywords=&industry=6281&occupation=6287&worktype=242&nation=3001&salary=100000-&page=1

118 jobs for developers/ programmers paying $100k plus - advertised on SEEK in the last 30 days.
317 jobs for developers/ programmers paying $70k - $100k - advertised on SEEK in the last 30 days.

Search the jobs advertised and see what is being offered for which roles and where your husband's expertise/qualifications/experience fit in.

For example, my brother based in Cape Town, is a senior software developer with a masters degree with 10 plus years experience and has been in a team leader position for most of those years.  He's developed programs for major companies all over the world and major companies in SA too, so he would want/expect to be paid at least $120k in NZ otherwise he'll have to go to Oz.  Ex-colleagues in Oz are begging him to go there, but he's not quite ready for the immigration thing yet.  I am working on him

Good luck  O0

Hello minoa and  :welcome:  !!!

I am in IT myself and the info from SA3001 is a pretty good summary of what you can expect.
Of course there are lots of factors involved.

Best of luck with all your future endeavours!!

 :welcome:  Minoa

A Senior position would easily yield $95K per year.
Salaries do vary, from location and company and then there are always fringe benefits that some companies offer.
Not talking medical Aid and Life insurance like SA firms, these could vary from profit sharing to company cars and discount holidays.

As for you, there are at least 2 large Laboratory firms in NZ namely, Diagnostic Medlab & Lab Tests

On the weather topic, it isn't too cold at all if you stick to Auckland. It's a lot like the weather in Cape Town.

weather depends on where you are.
The S Island east coast is much drier than AKL but colder.
Welly is colder than AKL and wetter and famous for wind.
Hawkes Bay - hot summers- dry - can be wet and cold in winter.

Auckland in a nutshell - summers Jan to April - about 21 to 26 every day with humidity but NOTHING on the scale of Durban or East London. Can be damp. May can be nice around 18 unless a cold front. June to September - about 15C every single day - not much variation - showers , sunshine one minute, rain the next - on and off ALL DAY every day. Oct and Nov about 17-19 every day. Maybe the odd day of 21C. December around 20 or 22 - can be wet like we have just seen. Can you live with Auckland weather????? few extremes - coldest winter day is 1C up to 11C (maybe 4 days per winter). the rest are 13 to 16. Summer days mostly about 23 or 24. You'll be lucky to see 30C in Auckland too often. That would be unbearable with the humidity.

What my family in East London dont seem to understand is that once may ends the temp dips below 20C and DOES NOT rise above that until late November. In East London in the middle of winter they can have 14C one day as the cold front passes and then 21C two days later. that does not happen in Auckland.
